Life Skills Training Center for Washington State School for the Blind was recognized with an Honor Award at the 2024 AIA Washington Council Civic Design Awards! Learning Independence for Today and Tomorrow (LIFTT) is a 10-month residential program designed to teach independent living skills to young adults who are blind or have low vision. Lund Opsahl provided structural design for this facility that features exposed wood elements in common areas, creating a sensory rich environment that is both easily usable and enjoyable for those who live and work there. The team was recently on site at KCMT's Interim Base for the delivery of the steel gantry trusses! These trusses, some up to 100ft long, will support bus charging on elevated platforms, using eco-friendly steel that meets SALMON-SAFE standards to protect the river ecosystem. By balancing a minimal concrete footprint with a series of cantilevers, the design minimizes costs, carbon, and environmental impact.
