What does a music artist and a startup founder have in common? ??
At first glance, they might seem completely different—one focused on music, the other on business. But as a musician and startup founder myself, I’ve noticed the two really aren’t that different…
Here are 5 lessons I’ve learned as a musician that I apply everyday while building Lunar Media
1?? HAVE A VISION: See what others can’t.
As an artist, creating music means imagining sounds and emotions that don’t yet exist—and bringing them to life. When I began creating music, I had to trust my instincts, even when no one else understood my direction.
The same is true in startups. When I launched my creator economy venture, people doubted our ideas and approach. However, founders, like artists, NEED to see the future before others do.
2?? TELL YOUR STORY: Connect with audiences on a deeper level.
Writing lyrics taught me the power of storytelling—how a simple melody or a well-written verse can make people feel heard. That’s how I build connections with my audience.
As a founder, I’ve learned to use storytelling to inspire my team, pitch to potential clients, and connect with others. Whether you’re writing a song or drafting a pitch deck, it’s about making people feel something and resonating with you or your mission.
3?? BE BOLD: Take Risks.
Releasing my first single (or any single) was SCARY, but exhilarating. “How will people receive this song?” “What if people don’t like this project I’ve poured countless hours into?”
Starting my company was no different. I took a chance on an idea with no guarantee of success. But I’ve realized that both artists and founders thrive in uncertainty, where bold decisions can lead to innovative results.
4?? BE RESILIENT: Overcome rejection.
I can’t count how many times my music has been turned down by labels, playlists or even close friends. The same happened with my startup—early pitches were met with “no,” and my ideas were dismissed.
But rejection taught me to keep improving, keep refining, and keep showing up. Both journeys require thick skin and a relentless mindset.
5??BE COMMUNITY FOCUSED: Bring people together.
My favorite kind of music is the kind that creates a sense of belonging. Whether it’s a packed concert or an intimate listening session, I’ve seen firsthand how music unites people.
As a founder, I realized that building a startup is also about creating a community—whether it’s a team, early adopters, or a network of peers. Without people huddling around a shared vision, neither an artist nor a founder can succeed.
?? These experiences have taught me that the creative and entrepreneurial worlds aren’t so different after all.
