H.R. 9495, or the "Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act" is a proposed legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives containing a controversial provision that would allow the U.S. Treasury Secretary, a position appointed by the president,? to label non-profits as terrorist-supporting organizations and strip them of their 501(c)(3) non-profit status without due process. Philadelphia is home to many newsrooms and non-profit organizations. This bill could potentially censor essential media outlets and leading community voices. It is important to note that the IRS already has a process for regulating and revoking existing organizations' non-profit status.
