EU Omnibus Regulation: Changes to sustainability reporting requirements. ? The EU Commission has presented a legislative proposal to simplify sustainability reporting for companies. The aim of the so-called Omnibus Regulation is to reduce the burden on companies without compromising the transparency and comparability of sustainability information. ?? The main changes at a glance: ?? Higher thresholds: Reporting will only be required for companies with more than 1,000 employees and either a revenue of more than 50 million EUR or a balance sheet total of more than 250 million EUR. ?? Postponement of reporting obligations: Large companies that are due to report in 2026 (so-called wave 2 companies) have to report the first time in 2028 for the financial year 2027. ?? Simplification of ESRS: The reporting standards ESRS will be simplified and the amount of mandatory datapoints will be reduced. ?? Reduced audit requirements: Planned extension from limited to reasonable assurance not applicable anymore. CSRD reports will remain at the “limited assurance” level. ?? Voluntary application: Companies with fewer than 1,000 employees can voluntarily apply a new voluntary standard for all companies out of scope, based on the voluntary standard for SMEs (VSME). ?? EU Taxonomy: The application of the EU taxonomy becomes voluntary for companies with less than 1,000 employees and less than 450 million EUR revenue. While the new regulations are intended to ease the burden on companies, the strategic importance of sustainability still remains undisputed. “Sustainability is a competitive advantage. Companies that implement sustainable business models at an early stage are more resilient to external crises such as rising energy prices or geopolitical tensions,” emphasizes our sustainability expert Charlotte Beck. ?
