Clean Water and Medical Supplies for a Community in Central Zimbabwe- The donation from Luena Foundation was used to acquire medical kits and for the training of staff on how to administer basic medical supplies. The medical kit consisted of chlorine tablets to disinfect water, antibiotics, de-worming medicine, and basic first aid supplies like bandages, pain relievers, and diarrhea medications. In addition, two staff members will receive training from the Red Cross Society. With this kit and staff, Simuka Africa Zimbabwe was able to serve 150 households (1,050 people) directly, and 500 households (3,500 people) indirectly through health education. Those targeted will be households of children and youth who are acquiring services at Simuka’s library facilities and through the girls and boys club initiatives. Secondly, a community borehole was drilled to enable the community to access clean water. The borehole serves approximately 700 households. The organization has formed Community Water Committees who are trained in basic borehole maintenance. Thirdly, Simuka Africa established a small organic vegetable garden to produce nutritious food for the children in its programs as well as generate income for program costs. Care for a Malnourished Child in Western Uganda - Malnutrition is poised to destroy a generation of children in Uganda. It’s reported that more than one third of all young children (2.4 million) are stunted. The case of Gilbert Mumbere is relatable to these statistics. His diagnosis of severe malnutrition required urgent medical and social rehabilitation which his immediate family could not provide. Gilbert is a 5-year-old boy who was abandoned by his teenage parents. While staying with his poor grandmother in Maliba Village in Kasese District, Gilbert’s life deteriorated to the extent of severe malnutrition, wasting, and stunting. At the time that his condition came to the attention of concerned authorities, Gilbert had been almost left for dead. He was rushed to St. Paul’s Hospital in Kasese Town for medical attention, and is now housed and cared for at NOTDEC Orphanage. Gilbert is not able to talk and walk, but life is still there that needs everyone’s compassion and care. During Gilbert’s hospitalization, and now that he is at the orphanage, Luena Foundation’s donation has been used to provide Gilbert’s basic needs of nutritious foods, drinks, clothing, bedding, and sanitary consumables like disposable diapers, soaps and detergents. The social support provided to Gilbert will be crucial to his rehabilitation and recovery outcomes, and contribute to a healthy life again.
