Last week's Messari #Mainnet in New York was an interesting event. It was definitely much smaller than TOKEN2049 but also smaller than I'd expected. Many theories about why, which I won't get into...! ?? Having said that, I realized that I actually enjoy some of these smaller conferences for different reasons. It's much easier to meet people; the side events are less crowded; quality collisions are more numerous. The speakers at the conference itself were fantastic. Being less than 2 miles from the actual Wall St, it was of course heavy on institutional participation. There was a lot of talk about regulations, the elections, and RWA. And I don't think there's any doubt that NYC is the Web3 capital of the US. Bringing Lucrisma there was a lot of fun! But at the end of the day, it's the people! Meeting friends, colleagues & partners is what these conferences are always about. Hanging out with Houston friends Sheldon Weisfeld & Christine G. New York City has become the de facto hub for Web3 in the US (sorry, Miami!) and Messari #Mainnet is THE event to go to there. After the crypto focused TOKEN2049 in Singapore, I am looking forward to this institutional focused event. Last week was a fantastic week as the world descended on Singapore for #TOKEN2049 and #Formula1. Here are my key takeaways from the event: 1. A lot of soul-searching about Ethereum & its web of Layer 2s: There were a ton sessions on Ethereum scalability, including a keynote from Vitalik, that spoke to the idea of L2s being "parasitic" chains. There seems to be an internal tug-of-war between the L1 maxis & those who believe L2s are necessary for any chain to scale. 2. Decentralized AI is hard: There was also lot of talk of decentralized AI. There is definitely a need for some form of control over AI before AGI arrives, but whether blockchain is the solution for it is debatable. 3. TOKEN2049 is the must-attend event of the year: Having been to so many blockchain events over the years now, I can confidently say that TOKEN2049 has become THE event of the year. It is phenomenally organized, and everyone in crypto has made it the must-attend event of the year. 4. Formula 1 + Crypto = ??: The tie-in with the Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix brought a halo to the conference that just can't be replicated! The best F1 drivers in the world being brought up on stage just made it a much more exciting event! 5. Asia is where the crypto energy is: The energy in Singapore was off the charts. There are so many people building so many interesting projects in Asia, that it is a sight to behold! There is a lot of optimism (no pun intended!) in the air about the technology & its benefits. 6. However, it's the Americans that loom large on stage: But the biggest companies, projects & investors in the world are still Americans. My guess was that about 75% of speakers on stage were Americans. We see this gap manifest in the bankrolling of pro-crypto candidates in these US elections by the crypto industry to the tune of $120 million! 7. And the entire world waits for the Fed interest rate cuts & US presidential elections: Being on the other side of the globe, it was very interesting to see non-Americans being so up-to-date on a lot of the happenings in the US; the rate cuts & of course the presidential elections (cat-eating & all!) Even in crypto, the world still looks to the US for guidance. 8. The debate on investing in infra vs apps continues on: There's still a lot of debate amongst investors about investing in infrastructure vs apps. There are investors who have bought into the who idea of the fat protocol thesis, and believe that there is no difference between infrastructure & apps, while others clearly believe that we need more apps (like Lucrisma) with simplified UX to truly utilize all the infra that's been built over the years. 9. There truly is nothing like meeting people irl: In the post-covid world of zoom calls, irl events are back & better than before. I love ideas which are at face-value absolutely bonkers! But the 3 zoom calls I did today with folks from the around the planet used to be similarly bonkers - only seen in sci-fi movies till not too long ago! And that is why I'm excited for next week's Houston Blockchain Alliance event featuring Angelo Alessio, founder & protocol architect at build_cities. Technically, build_cities is a protocol for economic development around the world. But philosophically, it gets to a more basic question of what it means to be a city/state/country, and whether, in this online world, one has to be physically present in an area to be considered a part of that ecosystem. The August edition of the HBA events featured Karen Scarbrough from Microsoft Blockchain & ED of the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance speaking about her experience of helping enterprises with their blockchain strategy over the years. ???? There were numerous takeaways from her talk, but the one that jumped out the most was that some companies are looking at ways to potentially use public blockchains while still maintaining privacy. The July edition of the Houston Blockchain Alliance event was a very interesting take on the intersection of crypto and traditional banking. Gene Grant III did an excellent job explaining LevelField Financial's vision for bitcoin & ether collateralized loans from a regular bank. Thanks to everyone who made it out in spite of dealing with the aftermath of hurricane Beryl that tore through Houston just a few days before! The next event is next Thursday, August 8 where Karen Scarbrough of the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance will talk about enterprise blockchain. This is a very relevant topic especially for Houston. I had met Karen Scarbrough at a Houston Ethereum meetup some 7 years ago. While our paths getting there couldn't have been more different, we had both recently seen the light of blockchain technology.
