    Short Staffing Isn’t Just a Nurse Problem. Patients Feel It First. A unit is drowning. Clinicians are stretched too thin. Call lights keep ringing. The ED is backed up. The ICU is full. There’s a simple fix: get more hands on deck. But instead of quickly bringing in a qualified travel clinician who’s ready to start, the hospital… stalls. HR kicks back the profile over a minor formatting issue... The hiring manager takes a week (or two) to respond... They hold out for the “perfect” candidate when a great one is already available... Meanwhile, the staff who did show up are running on fumes, and patients are the ones who suffer first. Early warning signs get missed. Preventable complications happen. People wait longer for care in already overcrowded hospitals. This is what happens when we make hiring harder than it needs to be. Recruiting isn’t just about filling positions. It’s about getting clinicians to the bedside so patients get the care they deserve. Staffing should be about saving lives, not obsessing over whether a staffing cover page has the right formatting.     ? Great leaders don’t manage people—they invest in them. ? In leadership, think of every interaction as a deposit or a withdrawal from your team’s Emotional Bank Account. The more trust and goodwill you build(deposits), the stronger your relationships and the more engaged your team will be. They have to be authentic, and they can't be forced, or they won't work. If you struggle to find opportunities to do this at work, start by practicing with your kids at home. You'll find lots of opportunities to build trust, and will be thrilled to see them light up as their Emotional Bank Accounts are filled ?? How to Make Deposits in Your Team’s Emotional Bank Account: 1. Show Appreciation – A simple “thank you” goes a long way. Recognize effort, celebrate small wins, and make people feel valued. 2. Listen With Empathy – Being fully present and truly hearing your team builds trust. People need to feel understood, not just heard. 3. Be Consistent & Reliable – Follow through on commitments, set clear expectations, and be someone your team can count on. 4. Give Constructive Feedback with Care – Tough conversations don’t have to drain the account. When feedback is given with support and a clear path forward, it strengthens trust rather than erodes it. 5. Support Growth – Invest in people’s development. When your team sees you care about their success, engagement and motivation soar. The Leadership Takeaway: A high Emotional Bank Account leads to trust, loyalty, and stronger performance. But too many withdrawals—broken trust, lack of recognition, inconsistent leadership—will lead to disengagement and burnout. Great leaders don’t just manage tasks; they invest in relationships. It's hard, but make a deliberate choice every day to think about your team’s Emotional Bank Accounts, make some deposits, and avoid withdrawals.
