Today, it’s tariffs. Tomorrow, someone you love could be locked in a cage—or far worse—under the guise of a “war” on fentanyl. If you want a clear picture of what the war on drugs really means, picture your son or daughter, your sister or brother, or your mother or father. Think of them thrown to the ground, violently restrained, locked in a filthy prison cell, subjected to forced medical treatment, and potentially killed. Then multiply that by a factor of thousands and thousands of people. Maybe it won’t happen to your family, if you’re lucky. But everyone they will target is loved by someone. As anyone of conscience can tell, what is happening in the United States is immoral and marked by a type of greed, corruption, and cruelty that now operates with impunity and in plain sight. The consequences will be predictably tragic for everybody—and those who already have the least seem to be those who will lose the most. Sadly, that is the whole point.? In our view, there is no line that separates the people who are deserving—of housing, health, food, education, freedom, and happiness—from those who aren’t. That’s the basic measure of how equality and equity should function in a civilized society. It is the cornerstone of how we operate. We believe these things are so fundamental that it shocks us that they even need to be expressed aloud. Clearly, however, they do.? The past days, weeks, and months have made clear that a great number of people in positions of power and leadership see this moment through the eyes of the same opportunism and corruption that brought us to this precipice. If there is to be any rescue, it won’t be by their hands.We are solely responsible for one another. As an organization of ordinary people—not shareholders, not constituents, not stakeholders, or any other shorthand to obscure our meaning—we will do our part to be responsible for one another and to spend our limited power to do good for other ordinary people. We are hopeful that there are enough of us who share these simple values so that something better can be built on whatever remains when the greed and cruelty that beset us inevitably collapse under their own foul weight.
