Exposed steel framing and concrete masonry unit (CMU) veneer connect to the district’s classic school style, while metal siding, wood-look soffits, and colored metal panels introduce a contemporary flair with vibrant accents taken from the school colors. In honor of Veterans Day, LSW Architects is proud to showcase a special project in collaboration with Samaritan House that combats homelessness among veterans in Kalispell, Montana. Our HUD VASH apartment project will provide 16 sustainable, trauma-informed design homes that foster dignity, healing, and community. With biophilic touches and spaces that evoke Montana’s natural beauty, we’re creating a sanctuary where veterans can rebuild, reconnect, and thrive. This is more than housing; it’s a place of pride, resilience, and hope. Recently at the A4LE 2024 International LearningSCAPES conference in Portland, our Associate Principal, Karen Knauss, AIA, Assoc. DBIA, and fellow research colleague Karen Diller, Associate Dean of the Library at Bellevue College, presented “Does Design Matter? The Elementary School Building Environment Through the Eyes of a Child: How Demographics Impact Student Perception of Space.” This two-year study, conducted in collaboration with Evergreen Public Schools and Burton Elementary School, gathered data from a diverse sample of Burton ES students using GoPros and mapping exercises. Students' perceptions were captured by comparing experiences in their soon-to-be-demolished 50-year-old school with those in a newly designed facility, observed one year apart. The data shows that the non-majority populations are significantly more positively impacted by thoughtfully designed spaces. The Evergreen High School Skilled Trades Center was designed to support construction trades and related academic programs, providing students hands-on experience in small-scale building and manufacturing projects. Intended to replicate real-world skilled trades environments, LSW partnered with EPS, a local PEMB supplier, and private donors to create this industry-leading facility. The Columbia River High School 500 Building Addition brings the chemistry, physics, engineering and math programs into one location, creating a more collaborative learning environment that reinforces the interconnected nature of these disciplines. A key feature of the building is an open, centralized space, which acts as a collaborative terminal area where students gather or pass through between classes.
