Happy Birthday, Claude Monet! ?? The founder of French Impressionism led an incredible life—he was a master gardener, served in the military in Algeria, nearly went blind from cataracts, and even destroyed at least 500 of his own paintings. Monet was a driving force behind the evolution of Impressionism, inspiring artists across Europe and the United States. Many American artists traveled to his home and studio in Giverny to learn from this French visionary. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Lilla Cabot Perry (1848-1933), was an early advocate of the French Impressionist style. She befriended Claude Monet, spending nine summers in the small village of Giverny in order to glean inspiration from the French master. Although she did not receive formal training until her thirties, Perry was a prominent figure in the American Impressionism movement, helping to introduce her country to the looser, stylized technique that emphasized the atmospheric effects of light on color, the painting’s surface, and intimate vignettes of life and the natural world. View one of Perry’s life-sized portraits titled 'The Poacher' during 'In a New Light: American Impressionism 1870-1940, Works from the Bank of America Collection' through March 23, 2025. Artwork: Lilla Cabot Perry (American, 1848–1933), The Poacher, 1907. Oil on linen. Bank of America Collection.
