This Ramadan season, we've been truly heartened by the outpouring of support from our community, ensuring that our new neighbors have a roof over their heads and food on their tables as we navigate funding cuts for newly arrived refugees. Last Sunday, our group of dedicated volunteers delivered hot meals to over 300 individuals for Iftar, helping them break their fast. A big thank you to those who took the initiative to cover the cost of the meals, and to our amazing volunteer family who drove miles to ensure food reached families just in time for Iftar. LSSNCA is a human services and immigration relief and refugee welcome agency that has served the DMV since 1917.
关于我们
Since 1917, Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSSNCA), a human services and immigration relief and refugee welcome agency, has accompanied those in need throughout Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. to foster resiliency, self-sufficiency, and access to opportunities. We provide services that last beyond just the initial arrival for families, youth, children, and individuals rebuilding their lives in the D.C. metro area. LSSNCA is accredited by COA Accreditation, a service of Social Current. Motivated daily by our belief in the inherent dignity of all, LSSNCA’s innovative participant-informed programs serve refugees, forced migrants, immigrants, children and youth, and underserved communities by filling in the gaps. Piloting initiatives like the area’s first camp for kids impacted by the HIV/AIDS crisis, originating local pro se asylum workshops for Afghan Allies, launching a Resource Center to serve as a community hub for all recently arrived program participants, and offering myriad trauma-informed mental health support services, LSSNCA strives to create an inclusive community of well-being where people thrive.

Covering the rental assistance promised to new refugees is LSSNCA’s most pressing concern. By early March, at least 42 households under its care had received eviction notices, putting nearly 170 people in Virginia and Maryland on the edge of homelessness, with more—like Rahmani’s family—at risk. LSSNCA staff has been negotiating with landlords and fundraising to stave off evictions. 45 years ago today, President Jimmy Carter signed the bipartisan Refugee Act of 1980, establishing the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) and asylum systems. Since then, millions have found safety, opportunity, and a home in the U.S. Thanks to this law, lives have been transformed—families reunited, dreams realized, and communities enriched. We've seen firsthand the profound impact of resettlement. People like Dieu, who fled the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, spent his childhood in a refugee camp, and is now pursuing his dream of becoming a pilot in the U.S. And LSSNCA COO Mamadou, who spent 11 years in a refugee camp before resettling here, is now helping others achieve the same. But our legacy of welcome is at risk. The US Refugee Admissions Program is suspended, and resettlement funds are being slashed. We need your voice and action. ? Contact your representative and demand the resumption of USRAP. https://lnkd.in/da8KKBMV ? Donate to support newly arrived refugees with housing, job training, and essentials. https://lssnca.org/donate/ For 45 years, America has been a beacon of hope. Let’s continue this legacy of welcome. #RefugeesWelcome #USRAP #LSSNCA #SupportRefugees
