I was honored to participate in the 3rd annual "Bridging the Gap" program last month. The program allows youth to interact with Lincoln Police officers and Lancaster County Sheriff's Office deputies to learn about law enforcement practices, equipment, and special units but also share their own perspectives and questions about community relations with law enforcement. In addition to demonstrations by various law enforcement units, area youth demonstrated restorative circle activities, art, and games. Shout out to Lauren Farris for the great pictures! The Bridging the Gap program started in 2022 as a collaborative effort between LSO, LPD, and local youth outreach groups. This year's two-day event included youth and staff from the Lighthouse After School Program, Malone Community Center, Asian Community & Cultural Center of Lincoln, NE, El Centro de las Americas, YWCA of Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska Human Services, and area law enforcement agencies. The conversations and relationships built by this program are so important to helping our community flourish. Can't wait until next year!
