For the past 2 years, The Flats Guesthouse has been taking strides toward a more sustainable future. Our goal is to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and provide an eco-friendly stay without compromising comfort. Here’s what we have accomplished: Landscaping with purpose – Removed non-native plants to promote a more sustainable environment. Reducing waste – Replaced single-use toiletries with refillable shampoo and conditioner dispensers. Sustainable swaps – Switched from disposable makeup wipes to washable towels and from dryer sheets to reusable dryer balls. Less plastic, more impact – Eliminated plastic bottles of lotion and soap in favor of refillable glass containers. Smarter energy use – Installed eco-friendly light bulbs wherever possible. Every small change adds up, and we are proud to be a part of a more sustainable hospitality experience. Next time you need to stay in Rogers Park, we’d love for you to see the difference first hand!

Meet Katie Golson, the CEO of Loyola Led Enterprises, whose leadership journey demonstrates resilience, adaptability, and the power of student-driven innovation. Stepping into the CEO role was a natural progression for Katie, who was the former President of The Flats, our student-run hotel. She gained hands-on experience managing operations, making strategic decisions, and leading a team—ultimately preparing her to take on the challenge of overseeing multiple student-run businesses. While she didn’t enter the role with a business background, she embraced every learning opportunity and challenge, gaining valuable experience in strategic planning, time management, and business analysis—skills she sees as essential for her future career in nonprofit management. One of the most rewarding aspects of leading Loyola Led Enterprises has been witnessing the growth of her peers. “Seeing my peers grow as leaders and professionals through their work with LLE is the most rewarding part of my job. Knowing I have contributed to their growth has motivated me to work harder at what I do.” Her advice to other students who want to take on leadership roles: “You will never know what you are capable of until you try. Leadership can feel intimidating especially when you are leading fellow students. However, you have to try to know what you’re good at and where in an organizational hierarchy you shine the brightest.”

This past weekend we were honored to travel to Stanford University to attend the Student-Run Business Association's 2024 Surge Expo. 5 Loyola Led employees were selected to attend the conference – Katie Golson, Archer Heeren, Izabella DiPiazza, Matthew Castellanos, and Danielle Omer – to learn and listen from industry leaders and fellow student led businesses. On day 1 we were able to listen to great advice from Neal Sales-Griffin of Techstars as the keynote speaker, and afterwards we watched the pitch competition, where several young student entrepreneurs pitched their business ventures to a set of VC fund judges, who deliberated and chose a winner. Afterwards, we were treated to an incredible tour of Stanford’s campus and stopped for a happy hour at The Arbor on campus to wrap up the day. Day 2 brought much of the same, but with a larger focus on learning from each other’s experiences, particularly involving student run businesses. Starting with a workshop from Arantxa Valverde and Lilliana Robinson on how to learn as young entrepreneurs. Next up we had the incredible opportunity to listen to entrepreneurs and industry leaders Mark Cuban and Seth Godin dish out advice to our individual businesses. Lastly, Loyola Led was excited to participate in 2 workshops: Food & Beverage and Leading a Team of Peers. These workshops provided a great opportunity for discussion between different student enterprises on how we can work to better each other and continue to innovate and improve. A great deal of thanks to the entire SRBA, and specifically to Owen Raisch and Jas Espinosa for their hospitality and guidance throughout the entire conference.
