There's so many incredible stories to be told in Irish boxing... privileged to spread the word and share the love ????

    查看Irish Athletic Boxing Association的档案

IABA is the governing body of boxing, Ireland's most successful Olympic Sport. We're home to 18,000 people, and 350 clubs, on the island of Ireland.

This is boxing. The foundations for St. Catherine's Boxing Club were laid by a concerned parents group on the edge of Dublin’s Coombe in the late 1980s, as a way to divert young children from drugs. The club opened its doors in 2008, and is home to around 80 boxers. This film, telling the story of the club, is part of the IABA’s Seconds Out: Stories of Irish Boxing series, supported by Sport Ireland, and skillfully produced by Lowki Culture. This film is the 6th in a series which includes films on the Mammy of Irish Boxing, Anna Moore; a sneak-peak in to High Performance Boxing, on Eugene Duffy who is one of Ireland’s longest serving officials, and Connacht’s Gus Farrell. “While we’re a boxing club, we class ourselves as a community boxing club. We’re not necessarily focused on the results…we’re focused on the kids” says Head Coach Ronnie Byrne – the premium placed on children, their sense of belonging and their confidence is echoed by Coach, Trish McLoughlin “ It’s not all about champions for us. It’s about keeping kids off the street, keeping them right” Kellie McLoughlin, Trish’s daughter, is the reigning Elite 60kg champion. She says the club’s sense of community has lifted and supported her “I’ve come back to the club after losing a lot of times and they’ve made me feel like I’ve won. It’s amazing the feeling that they give you. You lose and they say – you got in the ring, you done brilliant. It just wasn’t your day it will eventually come” The club is also home to Barcelona Olympian and 1991 European Champion and now coach, Pauly Griffin, and coach Jimmy Halpin, who was recently awarded the IABA Lifetime Services to boxing award. Pauly says “I can’t even explain how important they (club leadership Ronnie Byrne, Karl and Trish McLoughlin) are to the community. They are here day in, day out. I’m just happy to be a part of it and give something back” Two time Irish champion, 14 year old Charley Scott says “They’re like my second family. I can talk to them about anything….Young girls are worried that it’s a boys’ sport, well, that’s what people say. Just don’t listen!”

IABA is the governing body of boxing, Ireland's most successful Olympic Sport. We're home to 18,000 people, and 350 clubs, on the island of Ireland.

IABA is unveilling the latest in the Seconds Out: Stories of Irish Boxing series, designed to platform and profile the work of the thousands of people who make Irish Boxing a vibrant, diverse community. “The first thing that comes to mind when people say boxing in Galway is Gus Farrell” – High Performance Athlete, Adam Hession Gus was selected by the Provincial Council as a person who has made a singular contribution to boxing in Galway, in Connacht and throughout IABA. ? Gus was born in Wexford, and is the county’s first ever National Elite Champion. He has two Elite titles under his belt (bantamweight and feather), and is a multi-Elite silver medalist. He has boxed for Ireland and as part of the Irish National Senior Team which toured the US in 1977. During that time, he visited Deer Park to watch Mohammed Ali prep for his bout with Leon Spinks and had a now historic “barney” with The Greatest. In the early 1980s, Gus moved to Galway and founded Monivea Boxing Club, which has gone on to produce multiple provincial and national champions, and international boxers. Gus also shares how he “accidentally” founded Monivea BC after an announcement by the town’s Parish Priest at Mass. "I went to the local priest to look for somewhere to leave and to keep training, because I was married with two kids at that time. He announced it at Mass the following Sunday - he said, there's a boxing club starting next week in the old hall. I said to myself, what's he talking about? I just wanted somewhere to keep fit. Low and behold, I went home. The next Thursday night we came up, and there was about 60 kids and 20 parents and it blossomed from there. We've been very lucky. Very lucky with the community and with the people that get involved" Gus’ coaching career is impressive. He was a High Performance coach before the formalization of HP coaching in the early 2000s. He became an Olympic coach as part of the backroom team for the Atlanta 1996 Games. Gus is a qualified IABA Coach Developer, which means he can deliver training to qualify people to coach boxing. He is also a member of the IABA Coach Education Committee, responsible for design and delivery of coach qualification courses. In 2023, he was elected a member of Connacht Provincial Council. After filming of this piece concluded, Gus won election as Interim President of Connacht. This profile includes contribution from members of Gus' family and the wider Galway community, including High Performance boxer, Adam Hession, Galway County Board Secretary and now Interim Connacht VP Alan Donnellan, and Gabe Cronley Seconds Out: Stories of Irish Boxing, commissioned by IABA and produced by Lowki Culture, is supported by Sport Ireland https://lnkd.in/e4gMdTmc
