We were delighted to welcome Lord Neil Mendoza, Chairman of Historic England and Julia Lopez, MP for Hornchurch and Upminster, to the Upminster Tithe Barn. Hélène Rossiter, our Director of Nature also attended to witness the stunning restoration of the medieval barn and to highlight the strong collaboration between the Lower Thames Crossing, Historic England, and Havering Council. How can national infrastructure projects and the heritage sector work together? In partnership, in communities and by adding heritage projects. There are many large, imminent, national projects like Lower Thames Crossing and the grid upgrades from National Grid The work will have direct impact on heritage and communities in their way. Historic England, as a statutory consultee, already works closely with eg National Highways to minimise harm and achieve community benefit. For example look at this project in Upminster. Visiting Upminster Tithe Barn with MP, Julia Lopez on Friday, we were able to climb up into the roof and see the wonderful restoration of a rare survival, a building dating from 1420-1440. Partnership is the key - working together and offering grant finance between London Borough of Havering, National Highways and Historic England. Skilled craftsmen have thatched a beautiful new roof using Turkish water reeds and French oak to restore some rotten timbers. Better projects, fewer objections and more benefit along the way. Although our #apprentice Jackson didn’t have the start he hoped for, he’s embraced every opportunity. He’s currently working in the Project Management team and has been out and about on site and supporting with advance work planning.
