Thank you Rachel Brown for shining a light on why the product formulation process can take up to 40 tries to get it right. Enjoyed hearing from the lab side, particularly Tish Poling at IPG, Ellen Lennon and Matt Stearn. Some of the key takeaways for founders to save time, money and resources: For founders: 1. Use an experienced R&D professional who understands the business and product priorities including COGs and margin requirements. Product Margin is directly linked to your bottom line, so get it right at the start. The lab can do a "paper formula" of your envisioned product to understand COGs prior to starting the development process. 2. Ensure you have alignment with internal stakeholders (exec team including your CFO) as well as external stakeholders (customers/retail partners) prior to creating your product pipeline. 3. Start with an existing product base that already has some initial stability data, so you arent starting from scratch. This could save you 3-6 months in stability testing time and costs. 4. Understand your lab's core competencies. Dont ask the lab because they will tell you they do everything well. They dont. Talk to their customers to learn pro's/cons. 5. Dont overcomplicate a formula. Too many active ingredients, a tricky fragrance or bad combination of active ingredients can complicate the process and cause stability challenges down the road. #beautyindustry #productdevelopment #skinscience #cleanbeauty #sustainability #founders
