I am so proud of my friend and neighbor Julie Self on this new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention research! What's most intriguing to me goes beyond the obvious connection between good nutrition and health. It's the correlation to connectedness, belonging and better mental health. More and more research is illuminating this and I am fascinated. At HealthMPowers, Inc. are hearing this from nearly all of our youth participants. As we embark on our latest strategic planning process, it's a key question we are asking ourselves. How can better health outcomes, and the process by which we get there, actually contribute positively to a sense of purpose and meaning for children and youth? And how does that fuel a more hopeful future? ???? Farm Dog Spotlight: Meet Scuppernong! ???? Every farm needs a protector and guardian. That’s Scupp! He's the closest thing to a working dog we have on the farm. Upon arrival every morning, he secures the farm perimeter before retiring for a nap in the sun or the AC (weather dependent). Then he keeps an eye out for delivery trucks to help guide them in and inspect for dog treats. It's a tough job and he takes it very seriously. It's been a heart wrenching week as we watch the reports of devastation from Hurricane Helene roll in. So much loss and so many friends and farms affected. Then, a chemical fire in our neighboring county, causing the evacuation of nearly 20,000 people, a shelter in place order for another 90,000 and the closure of the major highway to Atlanta. We have very little information about the long term environmental impact of this catastrophe. It's hard to know what to do, except pray and hold tight to each other. Be kind. Give space. Share what you've got and think about how best to strategize longterm for our collective survival in the face of global climate crises that likely aren't going to stop.
