We are starting the week off with new Loupe Artist, Madeleine Farley. Madeleine Farley is an established artist and filmmaker based in Los Angeles, known for her eclectic body of work across photography, film, and art. Trained by Ansel Adams’ protégé Ellie Kaufman, she started her career in fashion photography before moving into film. Her documentary "Trollywood" won international acclaim, and she directed the Discovery Channel’s "Gorilla School." Farley’s work often centers on environmental and social themes, including her endangered species exhibitions and documentary on Iggy Pop’s superfan. This series of photographs, Untitled Flowers, ?was created in Los Angeles during the Covid pandemic and subsequent lockdown. Using long exposures in a blackened studio Farley uses artificial light and movement to create otherworldly images in a language that both compels and questions. Flowers perish; we perish: this is the message of the early painters and of these images, conceived in the darkness of quarantine as the world is undone.
