We stand with kids in the justice system, no matter what.

关于我们

The Louisiana Center for Children’s Rights (LCCR) is a non-profit law office that fights to keep children out of the justice system so that they can thrive in their homes and communities. We both represent individual children in their court cases and address the systemic issues that trap mainly poor, Black youth in the justice system. Juvenile Defense: As the juvenile public defender in New Orleans, our Children’s Defense Team represents over 90% of children in the city who come into contact with the juvenile justice system. We provide each child with a holistic team – a lawyer, social worker, investigator, and youth advocate – to address both the causes and consequences of an arrest. Juvenile Life Without Parole: We represent the majority of Louisianans who are facing or serving life without parole sentences for crimes they committed as children, which the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled unconstitutional in all but the rarest cases. We know that children can and do change for the better, so we fight for their second chance. State and Local Advocacy: We advocate for policies that reduce the number of children in the justice system and provide better alternatives to arrest and incarceration. For the kids who do enter the system, we support policies that keep them safe, protect their rights, and get them home as soon as possible.

  • Happy #BlackHistoryMonth! February is certainly about celebrating, uplifting, and learning about the achievements and activism of Black inventors, innovators, organizers, scholars, artists, etc. throughout our country's history but also about acknowledging the continued struggle for progress, especially for Black youth, like those who led the desegregation sit-in movement beginning in Greensboro, NC and spreading to thirteen other states – including Louisiana – and expanding to other public spaces. ? ? Nearly a year ago, the state legislature convened a special session on crime and public safety that saw #raisetheage legislation repealed making Louisiana one of only four states that prosecutes 17-year-olds as adults. Organizations across the state are currently raising awareness about Amendment 3, a constitutional amendment – to be voted on during a special election on 3/29 – that could see even younger children transferred to the adult criminal legal system. Learn more about you can protect our youth by clicking here: https://noon3la.org.

  • #DidYouKnow: Children held in adult facilities are THIRTY-SIX TIMES more likely to commit suicide and face higher rates of abuse? Incarcerating a child of any age in adult prison has a clear and direct impact on their physical and mental well-being and leads to either recidivism (relapse or reoffending) or the child committing a more serious offense.? ? We're two months away from Amendment 3 being on ballots across #Louisiana during a special election on Sat, 3/29. Click the following link for more info and ways to get engaged as we join with other organizations from across the state in voting no on Amendment 3 and protecting our youth: https://noon3la.org

  • "Too often, the legal system compounds difficulties on top of difficulties for kids in Calvin’s position. What it sees in the courtroom is a kid who isn’t meeting their requirements or going to school. What it doesn’t ask is why.? ? It’s the “why” that forms the core of LCCR’s holistic approach, understanding that if a child doesn’t have stability outside the courtroom, there’s no way they can succeed inside of it."? ? ????????? ? • We like so many people across the city, state, and country woke up to the tragic news of the New Year's Day attack. Undoubtedly, we are deeply saddened by the numerous lives lost, the dozens of people injured, and anyone who has been affected by this catastrophic event.? ? As resources further develop, we will continue to share them on our socials. As we prepare not only for the March special election but also another busy legislative session, we remain committed to our mission of helping all system-involved youth eave the legal system behind for good so that they may thrive with their families in their communities and schools.
