Yesterday Cory Parker from The Celtic Media Centre and I had the pleasure of accompanying Raymond McIntyre Jr. of Pixel Magic to Jason Jamerson’s class at Louisiana State University (held in their amazing XR/Virtual Production Studios) where Ray gave a fun VFX demo and answered the students’ questions on “how they did that” for HBO’s “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” starring John C. Reilly, Quincy Isaiah, Adrien Brody, and a host of other incredible actors. If you haven’t seen the series, it is a virtual time machine that really transports you to the NBA in the late ‘70 and early ‘80s. Unfortunately HBO cancelled it after two seasons (which severely disappointed a lot of fans of the show, including me). I predict Ray and his crew will get nominated for the visual effects work on it at the next Emmys. And if you haven’t heard, I am in charge of launching the Louisiana Academy of Production (LAAP) in Baton Rouge in 2025. VFX and post will be one of our major CTE pathways for our students. Picture this: there is a 7th grader today growing up in near poverty somewhere in Baton Rouge. He or she will graduate from LAAP in 2029 ready to go to work in visual effects. Ten years from now he or she could easily be making six figures working in VFX in Baton Rouge (hopefully working on a series that filmed here), breaking the cycle of poverty that his or her family has endured for generations. With LAAP’s great partners like New Schools for Baton Rouge, Baton Rouge Area Foundation, Celtic, and Pixel Magic, that is now more than possible. And that, my friends, will be the real “winning time.” ???????? A few notes about the demo reel below: the show’s theme song has some NSFW lyrics (nothing LSU students can’t handle).
