As a mental health professional and a mom to a transgender child, I’m deeply aware of the anxiety and concerns many in the LGBTQ community are experiencing around this election. My duty as a parent is to support and advocate for my child’s well-being and safety. This morning, I sent a message to President Trump, urging him to address the mental health crisis and recognize the importance of accessible care for everyone, including those in the LGBTQ community. I hope he hears these voices and understands the impact of his policies. Let's continue to advocate for a future where mental health care is a priority and all individuals can feel supported and safe. This is what I sent: "Hello President Trump, I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in rural Virginia, and I’m writing to highlight urgent mental health needs. The current crisis demands that insurance policies cover mental health treatments without prohibitive costs. Too often, I see people walk away from essential trauma, severe depression, and anxiety treatments because they can’t afford care. As a trauma professional and Registered Play Therapist, I take Medicaid clients because I believe everyone deserves high-quality treatment, regardless of economic circumstances. In my experience, untreated trauma contributes significantly to crime, family challenges, and personal instability, and people need comprehensive therapies beyond Cognitive Behavioral or Reality Therapy to truly heal. I also respectfully ask for a compassionate approach to the trans community’s healthcare needs, especially regarding continued access to hormone blockers and necessary treatments for those already on these medications. Adults should have the right to determine their own treatment options, including medications and surgeries, based on personal medical needs.
