GLP-1 agonist drugs like semaglutide are huge blockbusters for diabetes and weight loss and other conditions, too. Semaglutide was recently shown to reduce alcohol use and alcohol cravings in patients with alcohol use disorder: https://lnkd.in/gJJ5ngVY. Now the FDA has announced that semaglutide is no longer on shortage, which means companies will soon be unable to sell the cheaper compounded versions of the medicine:   https://lnkd.in/gVK-VmEw. This week, popular telehealth company Hims and Hers saw its stock price tumble in response to this change (https://lnkd.in/dc6DKwrh). Why? Because without the cheaper compounded versions, most people can’t afford GLP-1 drugs. Will these new breakthrough treatments become out of reach for most people? As we continue to learn more about how these new medicines can help, I hope we will also find ways to improve access for the patients who can really benefit from them.
