Today at Lost Women of Science Initiative we launched a (bilingual ????????) series that we’ve had in the works since last summer: the incredible story of a Dominican woman who went from selling sweets in the street to becoming her country’s first female doctor. After a horrific clash with her country’s dictator, her story was nearly erased, and we're so honored to be able to share it with you today. It’s inspiring and heartbreaking and honestly surprisingly relevant for a story set in the early to mid-20th century. I'm so grateful to have gotten to spend these last months working with a dream team — Lorena Galliot (producer), Laura Gómez (host), David De Luca Ferrini (sound designer), Natalia Sanchez Loayza (assistant producer), along with Deborah Unger and the rest of the team Lost Women of Science Initiative. I’d love for you to hear it… and share it with anyone you think would appreciate it. Episodes are out in English and Spanish!

Who are the women that inspire you? 50% of the PIs and Co-PIs on the grants we fund are women. ??Women lead many of Sloan’s longest-standing research projects. • It’s not just on International Women’s Day that we get inspired by the contributions women make to society. It’s our everyday focus and the core of our mission. Here are three outstanding female scientists that should be on your radar: Eunice Newton Foote In 1856, Eunice Newton Foote showed that carbon dioxide traps the heat of the sun, beating the so-called “father of the greenhouse effect” by at least three years. By placing a glass cylinder full of carbon dioxide in the sun, she found that it heated up much faster than a cylinder of ordinary air. Her conclusion: more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere results in a warmer planet. Emma Unson Rotor In 1941, math teacher Emma Unson Rotor took a sabbatical to study physics at Johns Hopkins University. Her plans were disrupted when the Imperial Japanese Army invaded and occupied the Philippines, denying her the scholarship. So, she joined the Ordnance Development Division at the National Bureau of Standards. where she made groundbreaking research on the proximity fuze, the “world’s first ‘smart’ weapon.” Evangelina Rodríguez Perozo Born into poverty and abandoned by her parents, it’s a wonder Evangelina graduated medical school as the first female doctor in the Dominican Republic. Evangelina specialized in reproductive health, and she opened a maternity clinic. She also organized free milk distribution to poor families. Tragically, this saw her targeted by the Trujillo regime. Listen to her story in our five-part season, launching March 13.

  • In 15th-century China, societal norms more often than not confined women to the shadows. Yet, Lady Tan Yunxian, was different. She was a respected font of medical wisdom who authored a 1511 medical text that offered rare insights into women’s health. Her remarkable journey from an elite family to a revered physician is vividly reimagined in Lisa See’s bestselling novel, Lady Tan’s Circle of Women. In our latest Lost Women of Science Conversations episode, host Carol Sutton Lewis talks with Lisa See and scholar Lorraine Wilcox, who translated Tan’s original work. They explore the serendipitous discovery of Tan’s surviving manuscript; the intricate process of bringing Tan’s story to life; and the impact of Tan’s medical practices on women’s healthcare. Join us as we rediscover a woman whose contributions to medicine so nearly disappeared from the history books. Listen here, or wherever you get your podcasts https://lnkd.in/erTEveu4.

  • Born in 1831, Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler was the first Black female doctor in the United States. After the Civil War, she traveled to Virginia to treat refugees where she worked hard to dispel the myth that recently freed slaves were spreading disease. She advocated better living conditions and focused on preventative medicine to better public health. Dr. Crumpler is remembered for paving the way for other women of color in the field of medicine, and for her book on feminine healthcare and preventative treatments.
