Bridging the gap between workforce preparedness and employer’s needs in the LA region.

关于我们

We are a consortium of 19 community colleges, and our work extends beyond the borders of our campuses. We’re advocates of regional change, focused on opening doors for adult, disenfranchised, and incumbent workers; facilitating upskilling for the region’s existing labor force; expanding employment opportunities for students, and offering more highly trained candidates for employers.

Last week, the LARC Regional Faculty Equity Learning Committee (FELC) project, which includes over 50 faculty members from LA19, held a workshop on equitable grading, facilitated by BrandIQ. Inspired by Grading for Equity by Joe Feldman, faculty engaged in discussions on developing fairer assessment practices while upholding academic rigor. Discussions highlighted how traditional 0-100 grading scales can disproportionately penalize struggling students, whereas alternatives like 0-4 scales provide a more accurate measure of mastery. Zeros for missing work often make recovery nearly impossible, and minimum grading standards can help signal non-completion without setting students too far behind. Faculty also examined how extra credit and participation grades sometimes reflect privilege more than learning, emphasizing the importance of fair access to retakes and mastery-based grading. Clear rubrics and standards-based grading were identified as tools to improve transparency, particularly when faculty actively discuss rubrics with students to ensure clarity. In career-technical fields, faculty explored ways to balance equity with certification standards by incorporating ongoing skill mastery check-ins. The conversation also addressed the need for clearer guidelines on AI and academic integrity, as faculty rethink definitions of “cheating” in an era of content sharing. Faculty left the workshop with practical strategies to implement in their classrooms, reinforcing that even small changes can lead to more just and effective learning environments. #GradingForEquity #HigherEd #FacultyDevelopment #EquitableEducation #19Strong
