Romy, a retiree, was among the first cars lined up for a food distribution event at the Sowing Seeds For Life food pantry in Pomona. Living on a fixed income with rising living costs, including food, can exacerbate the most vulnerable in our community. Thanks to food distributions, older adults like Romy can pick up essential food resources to help celebrate holidays, special occasions and the whole year. The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank is honored to partner with the LA Clippers again at the annual Feed the Community event hosted at the Kia Forum in Inglewood.???? The event was a genuine team effort, with Clippers' team members including Amir Coffey and Terance Mann, staff and volunteers helping make food resources available to nearly 1,000 families and individuals in need. The Friday before the event, the Clippers' staff dedicated a volunteer day to assembling food kits at the Food Bank's City of Industry distribution center. We're grateful to receive a generous $100,000 grant from the Community Care Foundation as part of the Ecosystem of Barriers program, which addresses Social Determinants of Health. This support will empower the LA Regional Food Bank to continue operating nutrition programs and provide critical food assistance across LA County in efforts to mitigate the social detriments of health associated with food and nutrition insecurity. To prepare for the holiday season, the LA Regional Food Bank and partners prioritize securing turkeys, stuffing and hams and the wide range of foods that have special meaning to the rich diversity of families and individuals who turn to us. The increasing cost of living has left many hardworking individuals and families in a seriously tough spot, choosing between essential needs like rent, fuel, medicine and food. Kaydian Anderson, a Navy veteran the Food Bank met at the Sowing Seeds food distribution in Pomona, is just one of those feeling the effects of rising costs who gets the food he needs through one of our hundreds of partner agencies. Did you know the LA Regional Food Bank’s Extra Helpings Program redirected more than 28.3 million pounds of food in 2023? As a result of over 500 food donors, the Extra Helpings Program helped ensure that 28.3 million pounds of food went to our neighbors in need of food instead of landfills through 220 partner agencies across LA County. Community partners could collect nutritious, perishable, and prepared food from grocery stores and other local sources in their neighborhoods.
