As we gather with loved ones this Thanksgiving, Maurice reflects on his freedom after 38 years of wrongful incarceration and what it has meant to him to have the chance to give back. His story reminds us of the power of resilience and the difference that even one person can make in their community. ? At LAIP, we work to exonerate innocent individuals who, like Maurice, have been wrongfully convicted. Behind every exoneration is a family hoping for a loved one’s return, and it’s only with the support of people like you that we can continue this vital work. ? This Thanksgiving, we invite you to join LAIP in the fight for justice and freedom. Support our mission and help us bring innocent people home to their families at www.InnocenceLA.org
关于我们
The Los Angeles Innocence Project (LAIP) is a nonprofit legal organization that provides pro bono legal representation and investigatory services to indigent individuals in Central and Southern California who were convicted of crimes they did not commit. We are part of a groundbreaking collaboration with Cal State LA’s California Forensic Science Institute’s (CFSI) academic graduate program in criminalistics and forensics. LAIP’s mission is to exonerate the wrongly convicted; free the wrongfully incarcerated; uncover and remedy past misuse of forensic and other scientific evidence in the courtroom; improve standards for the use of forensic and other scientific evidence in the courtroom; and improve the dialogue between scientists and stakeholders in the criminal legal system and reform the criminal legal system to prevent future injustice.

Join us in celebrating Jane Dorotik’s birthday! ? Jane, who spent nearly two decades in prison for a crime she did not commit, turns 77 today. ? In 2001, Jane was wrongly convicted of her husband’s murder, and spent the next 19 years fighting for her freedom. She was finally released from prison in April 2020, and her conviction was overturned three months later. Prosecutors planned to retry her, but on May 16, 2022 – the first day of jury selection – they dismissed the charges. ? Jane’s own experience fuels her work for others: she is a fierce advocate for prison abolition as well as dignity and compassion for all incarcerated individuals.? While in prison, she founded Compassionate Companions, an organization within the California Institute for Women that provides kindness and compassion to incarcerated women experiencing catastrophic emotional events, and provides vigils and care for the terminally ill.?? ? In addition to serving as a policy advisor for the Los Angeles Innocence Project, Jane is a member of the California Coalition for Women Prisoners (CCWP), the Board of Directors of Californians United for a Responsible Budget (CURB) and the DA Accountability Coalition.? ? Happy birthday, Jane! Thank you for your kindness, compassion and for all you do! With your support, we can continue to exonerate more innocent individuals like Jane.?
