In January 1968, the Departments of Registrar of Voters and County Recorder were merged by the Board of Supervisors and further merged with the County Clerk in January 1991. During this time, the three operations and 700 employees were situated in separate facilities. In July 1993, the department was able to fulfill its long-term goal of merging all functions to one site, providing a permanent and secure headquarter for all operations, as well as its extensive volume of 160 million documents.

Last week, our office began the 1% manual tally audit for the General Election—a randomized and public process that plays a vital role in demonstrating the accuracy and integrity of our elections. Conducted at our ballot processing center, this procedure involves dedicated workers manually counting a random 1% of the votes. This process verifies the accuracy of the results and will continue throughout the canvass period until completed. We remain dedicated to our commitment to transparency and upholding the highest standards of election integrity.

Our office is committed to processing every ballot cast by LA County voters with security and transparency. We are a large county with many voters returning their ballots on Election Day. Processing, verifying, and counting these ballots take time. Since Election Night, our office has processed, verified, and counted over 1 million ballots in the Official Election Canvass. We will continue to process and count the remaining ballots throughout the canvass period and certify the results on December 3. #LAVotes
