The start-up is tackling a massive issue - $180 billion is spent annually on haulage across Africa, which means that up to 75% of a product’s cost is due to logistics (compared to 6% in the US).
Lori’s tech-enabled and operations-driven marketplace efficiently connects transport to cargo. The supply chain management system brings transparency and has pushed significantly improved flexibility, reliability, and cost savings (savings upwards of 18%).
The company has experienced 30% month-over-month compounded growth since product launch in May 2017. The market demand for Lori’s platform is increasing exponentially. To continue this pace of growth, Lori recently closed a landmark raise from globally leading institutional and strategic investors. The company won Techcrunch Battlefield Africa.

As Lori celebrates its 8th anniversary, I wanted to reflect on our journey, share a few exciting updates, and reaffirm our commitment to the ecosystem. The past few years have tested the resilience of tech startups globally. Challenges like funding, FX, and inflation have been particularly acute in our markets. Yet, they’ve underscored the strength of our community. From?Josh Sandler?and?Uche Ogboi, CFA,?to the dedicated Lorians who contributed and continue to build, it truly has taken a village. Since stepping into the CEO role in 2023, I’ve led a focused team on continuous improvement. We’re grateful for the support of new investors like?Delta40 Venture Studio?and?Future Africa, who led our recent recapitalization alongside?Persistent, FP Capital ,?54 Collective,?Aadil Mamujee?(Musha Ventures), and?Playfair. Our new board’s belief in our vision fuels our drive forward. Our focus remains sharp: delivering affordable, reliable, and efficient logistics for our shipping partners. To our transporters—who’ve trusted us through thick and thin—thank you. Over eight years, we’ve disbursed $75M+ in transport fees, supported 40,000+ jobs, and moved 2.6M+ tons of cargo, including 600,000+ tons of wheat. Our load optimization efforts have also helped avoid over 9,000 tons of CO2 emissions. With partners like?Persistent, we aim to advance our climate impact and transport costs through with electric vehicles, accelerating the shift to zero-emission supply chains. Our Co-Founder and CEO, Jean-Claude Homawoo, is attending #ClimateWeek in New York City this week, where conversations about our planet's future are at the forefront.Transportation accounts for 24% of Africa's greenhouse gas emissions, and 12% of those emissions are from heavy-duty trucks. The key to both our mission of lowering the cost of goods on the continent AND reducing CO2 emissions lies in trip optimization and reducing empty miles by ensuring transporters have paid loads in both directions. Our simple but effective strategy has already resulted in 9,000 tons of CO2 emissions avoided, contributing to a more sustainable future. It’s a start but there’s a lot more work to be done, and infinite opportunities to achieve meaningful cost and carbon reduction, and we're committed to exploring new, innovative ways to reduce emissions across the logistics industry.
