Hello, my name is Genesis Bencivenga Sr., and I am the Owner and Co-Founder of Lorenzo's Frozen Pudding. As a "small business," many things can be challenging. I’m often asked, “How?” or “Why?” The answer is always simple—this is it for me. This business is successful, and there’s nothing “small” about it. I’ve gotten used to the “no’s,” the “not now’s,” and the “unfortunately’s.” I learn from them, I grow, and I move forward. My father, who served in the US Army always said, **“Improvise, Adapt, Overcome.”** I carry that mindset with me every day. Then, there are moments in business that seem to shout at me, *keep going*—and today was one of those days. I’m still in shock. Thank you to the Illinois SBDC at Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce and Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce for this incredible opportunity, and to Wintrust Bank Chicago for sharing your beautiful space! I was honored to be in the room with such amazing competitors and small business enthusiasts. Thank you to the judges for seeing me. To my fellow entrepreneurs—let’s work together and build! As the Owner and CEO of Lorenzo's Frozen Pudding, I had the privilege of sitting down with NBC News Anchor Christian Farr to discuss a variety of topics, with the conversation around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) taking center stage. Since the COVID pandemic and the tragic murder of George Floyd, many large corporations have been pushing to “learn about biases” and implement programs to raise awareness about issues that should have been acknowledged long ago. These efforts stem from the painful history of a nation that fought for freedom, only to see its progress erased time and time again. What Christian Farr and other dedicated reporters and journalists are doing is truly inspiring. They're telling real stories, speaking to real people, and highlighting issues that matter. My journey is a true underdog story—starting by selling on the streets of Chicago to now having a presence in retail stores. Like many others, one of the biggest challenges we face is access to capital. But what truly matters is being authentic. When you're authentic, your message resonates with your audience, and they respond. Thank you, Christian, for capturing this important moment.
