As a company based in New Orleans with a team member in North Carolina and a client that provides address-specific wind and water data in the days prior to a hurricane's landfall, we've been very focused on the impact of Hurricane Helene. The devastation is still unfolding, and its reach and impact runs far and wide. Here's one of many shocking outcomes from this horrifying storm, and it happens to be tech-centered: apparently silicon chips are largely dependent on quartz from Spruce Pine in North Carolina. The mines in this area are closed indefinitely. Electronics are likely going to become more expensive, and it might slow down the rate at which AI advances. As a software engineer, you're likely working with AWS on a daily basis. Our team discussed Chris S.'s article below and noted some of our faves from his list of AWS Lambda Microstacks: 1.) S3 + Lambda 2.) EventBridge + Lambda 3.) DyanmoDB + Lambda 4.) SQS + Lambda EventBridge + Lambda is a go-to for one of our lead engineers when running cron jobs on distributed servers: "If I have 10 severs running to handle responses, I don't want all 10 of them to run their own timers and ALL do the cron jobs. I just want one of the 10 servers to handle it. There are some fantastic insights about the future of software development in the Age of AI, and two of our favorites are: 1.) Sarah Guthals, PhD: Convo of "engineer vs. coder" and how software developers need to think more strategically in the age of AI and focus more on business objectives than the act of writing code. We agree with her statement ^^ completely and have been a team of software engineers who operate with this mindset for almost a decade. 2.) S?ren Bramer Schmidt: Makes a great analogy: AI is to software engineer as Photoshop is to photographer. He talks about how AI will result in an "explosion of software development" and likens it to the launch of Photoshop. "We didn't stop having photographers and editors, we just started to do a whole lot more photo editing...." We hadn't considered this analogy prior to watching this webinar, but we think it's quite a good one.
