  • Happy #GirlScoutsDay! Today, we’re celebrating our local Troops by sharing some photos from our recent Girl Scout Drop-In Day! Thank you to all the Girl Scouts who came to learn about democracy in America and Long Island! From Daisies to Juliettes, over 70 girls from across the county earned their LIM History Maven Patch and completed requirements towards their democracy badge by exploring our two new exhibitions, “Building the Ballot Box” and “Voices and Votes,” and creating their own suffragette sashes and buttons inspired by the historic objects on display. We also appreciate the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County and the League of Women Voters of Suffolk County who came to support the event and engage the Girl Scouts in conversations about the importance of civic participation. Want to learn more about our Scout programs? Visit the Learn and Explore tab on our website. Plan your visit to see these inspiring exhibitions at longislandmuseum.org. - #LongislandMuseum #GirlScouts #LeaugeOfWomenVoters

  • LIM and The Greater Port Jefferson Arts Council thanks everyone who attended the inaugural screening of our collaborative series, FILM @ LIM. We kicked off the series with “Geraldine Ferraro: Paving the Way,” followed by an insightful discussion with the film’s director and producer, Donna Zaccaro, who is also Ferraro’s daughter. The film documented Geraldine Ferraro’s trailblazing? Vice-Presidential nomination, highlighting the challenges she faced from political opponents and ingrained patriarchal traditions of the era. Following the screening, Zaccaro joined LIM Co-Executive Director Joshua Ruff for a conversation about her mother’s life and the creative journey behind the film. Join us for the next film screening of the series on April 1st at 7:00 PM as we watch “Home Court,” a PBS Independent Lens documentary about an Asian American high school star who pursues her hoop dreams as recruiting intensifies. Then Join us on May 9th, for a performance of “Shirley Chisholm: Unbossed and Unbowed,” a one-woman show by Ingrid Griffith. Register for both events at https://lnkd.in/eNsGtUtr - #LongIslandMuseum #GeraldineFerraro #DonnaZoccaro

A special thank you to the Museum Association of New York (MANY) members who attended in support, including Board President Dr. Georgette Grier-Key, Board Member Beth Ann Balalaos, and Agora Project Fellow Ren Lee. • We’re celebrating #WomensHistoryMonth by honoring the women who helped shape our democracy. Today we are sharing a few of the Women’s Suffrage objects currently on display for our “Building the Ballot Box” exhibition.? Sashes like these were worn during rallies, parades, and street speeches on Long Island. The color yellow became a symbol of the suffrage movement, inspired by the Kansas campaign, which used the hue to represent sunflowers. After decades of activism, New York became one of the first states to grant women the right to vote in 1917. Two years later, Congress passed the 19th Amendment, securing this right for women across the country. • New to the Carriage Museum is a display featuring this photograph of a coachman at work at? the turn of the twentieth century. During the age of carriages, Black men frequently filled the roles of coachmen, hostlers, and stable workers, becoming an essential part of the industry. A handwritten note on the back of this photograph identifies the Black driver as a “handyman” named Tasker. Presumably, “Tasker” was not his given name but a descriptive nickname used by the family for whom he worked. The case of this man being denied his own name shows that both racism and classism were powerful forces in American society. The Long Island Museum is dedicated to including more BIPOC stories in our Carriage Museum with a new exhibition, “Riding Towards Justice,” coming later this year. LIM acquired this photograph as part of our initiative to expand our permanent collection with objects of significance to the BIPOC community on Long Island. • As we continue our celebration of #BlackHistoryMonth, the LIM is proud to highlight a true gem from our art collection: “Summers’ Distraction” by Robert Graham Carter. Carter’s life experiences and technical skills have infused his art with a captivating narrative power with many of his figure paintings focusing on positive depictions of childhood and family. Born in 1938, he graduated from his hometown college, the University of Louisville, and received an MFA degree from the Pratt Institute, in Brooklyn. As a freelance illustrator for book publishers, Carter honed his artistic voice and eventually became a successful professor of drawing, painting, and design at Nassau County Community College. “I love teaching,” he says. “It forces an expansion.”? This work is featured in a display of our latest acquisitions on view in the Art Museum from February 20 through May 18.? We also encourage you to see Carter's inspiring work in the Heckscher Museum of Art's exhibition, “Robert Graham Carter: The Art of Reflection” through May 25, 2025.? - Robert Graham Carter (b. 1938,) “Summers' Distraction,” 2003, Acrylic paint, pencil, and varnish on paper, mounted to board. • We begin our observance of #BlackHistoryMonth by sharing a photograph of a young participant in a local civil rights demonstration held on March 5, 1960, generously gifted to the Long Island Museum by Long Island Civil Rights leader Eugene Burnet. Following the Greensboro, North Carolina sit-ins protesting segregation at the F.W. Woolworth lunch counter in early 1960, the NAACP organized pickets in solidarity. Demonstrations took place in Jamaica (pictured here), as well as in Flushing, Astoria, and Hempstead, continuing at various locations across New York every Saturday for many weeks. This photograph, along with others in the collection gifted by Burnett, will be on view at LIM for our exhibition “Building the Ballot Box: Long Island’s Democratic History” starting February 20, 2025 in our History Museum.
