Family Support for Remote Camp Workers

关于我们

Time away from loved ones is reported as the single most stressful aspect of remote camp work. Long-Distance Family is the first online platform to offer tailored services to worker's families (spouses and children) in remote camp lifestyles to promote well-being and quality relationships. We partner with employers to enhance worker recruitment, retention, and mental wellness. We partner with Canadian unions to deliver enhanced support services for the families of its members. Our services include: Peer Support: Worker's spouses learn coping strategies and support each other online through a peer support forum and support groups. Service Coordination: Families are connected to services and professionals that meet their specific mental health, wellness, and day-to-day needs. Events & Celebrations: In-person peer meet-ups for worker's spouses; assistance with personalizing family celebrations to include workers from afar.

Life-work integration starts with personal well-being. For FIFO workers and their families, prioritizing physical, mental, and emotional health makes managing time apart less overwhelming. ?? Regular exercise and a balanced diet help maintain energy, reduce stress, and support overall wellness, even in remote environments. ??Staying engaged in family life from a distance is just as important. Simple routines, like reading bedtime stories over video calls or attending key events virtually, create connection and continuity. ??Open conversations about household roles, schedules, and expectations help prevent misunderstandings and make transitions smoother. ??Shifting between work and home life takes intention. Taking time to decompress after arriving home and easing back into household routines can reduce stress. ??Consistent communication, through daily check-ins or shared message threads, keeps emotional connections strong. With proactive strategies and open communication, FIFO families can stay connected and thrive—together, even when apart. What are your best tips for life-work integration? Here’s the reality: No matter how dedicated someone is to their job, family responsibilities don’t disappear at the office door. Whether it’s a spouse managing solo while a partner works away, childcare concerns, or aging parents needing support—these stressors follow employees into the workplace. When companies invest in family-friendly policies and mental health support, they’re not just helping employees—they’re boosting retention, reducing absenteeism, and improving overall performance. ? Flexible work arrangements: More than half (51%) of employees would trade a 10%-20% salary increase for greater flexibility. ? Mental health resources: Employees increasingly seek personal value and purpose at work, desiring acknowledgment and growth opportunities beyond just a paycheck. ? Support for long-distance and solo parents: Recognizing employees as whole individuals with lives and families fosters a sense of value and belonging, leading to increased engagement. ? Family-inclusive benefits: A significant majority (79%) of employees prefer additional benefits or perks over a pay raise, highlighting the importance of comprehensive support. When people feel secure at home, they show up stronger at work. It’s time to recognize that family well-being is a business advantage. How does your company support employees and their families? Let’s discuss! ?? Long Distance Family Services #WorkplaceWellness #EmployeeEngagement #FamilySupport

Despite growing awareness of mental health's importance, many businesses remain hesitant to implement comprehensive support programs for their workforce. Several factors contribute to this reluctance: 1?? Perceived Costs: According to SHRM, organizations often view mental health initiatives as expensive, focusing on immediate expenses rather than long-term benefits. However, studies show that for every dollar invested in mental health programs, there is a return of four dollars in improved health and productivity. 2?? Stigma and Cultural Barriers:?A workplace culture that stigmatizes mental health issues can discourage both the adoption of support programs and employees from utilizing them. 3?? Lack of Awareness: Some employers may not fully understand the impact of mental health on employee performance and the organization's bottom line, leading to inaction. Overcoming these barriers is crucial. Here's how businesses can move forward: ?? Educate Leadership: Present data-driven insights, leverage testimonials and case studies, highlight legal and ethical considerations for workplace mental health obligations, and offer executive workshops to help leaders understand their role in fostering a mentally healthy workplace. ?? Foster an Inclusive Culture: Normalize mental health conversations, embed mental health in company values, create safe spaces such as peer support groups or designated wellness areas, and recognize and reward mental health advocacy in the workplace. ?? Invest in Training: Provide managers and employees with training to recognize and address mental health issues, ensuring early intervention and support. Provide mental health first aid training to employees, and integrate mental health into regular professional development programs to ensure long-term awareness and engagement. Being part of a FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) family can be challenging, but you’re not alone. Here are some ways to stay connected and supported: ? Schedule Regular Video Calls – Keep relationships strong with scheduled check-ins using Zoom, Google Meet, or Marco Polo for video updates, or use Caribu for interactive storytime with kids. ? Create a Virtual FIFO Buddy System – Pair up with another FIFO (Fly-In, Fly-Out) partner for ongoing support and check-ins through WhatsApp, Signal, or Voxer for easy voice messaging. ? Participate in Virtual Activities – Bond over shared interests, no matter the distance! Try Netflix Party (Teleparty) for movie nights, Kahoot! for family trivia, or Jackbox Games for fun, interactive play. ? Join Online Support Groups – Connect with other long-distance families through LDF's peer support forum or virtual peer support groups to share experiences, advice, and wins! ? Use FIFO Family Apps & Resources – Stay organized and emotionally supported with apps like TimeTree (shared family calendars), Couple (private messaging for partners), and OurPact (for managing kids’ screen time while solo parenting). ?? Industrial work comes with unique stressors—long hours, physical demands, and time away from home. But one of the biggest influences on a worker’s mental health isn’t found on the job site—it’s at home. A study by Avasthi & Sahoo highlights how family relationships play a vital role in workers’ mental well-being (see article link below). Here’s what they found: ?? Work-Family Conflict Worsens Mental Health Industrial workers often struggle to balance job demands with family responsibilities, leading to stress, anxiety, and even depression. The inability to be present for family milestones can create emotional strain. ?? Family as a Mental Health Lifeline A supportive family can be the first to notice early signs of distress, encourage self-care, and provide emotional stability. Strong family connections act as a buffer against workplace stress. ?? Holistic Approach Needed Mental health interventions must go beyond the individual worker. Including families in mental health education and support programs can improve outcomes, helping both workers and their loved ones cope with the challenges of this lifestyle. This research makes one thing clear: supporting industrial workers means supporting their families, too. Companies that recognize this connection can build stronger, healthier, and more resilient workforces. What steps do you think employers should take to integrate family support into their mental health strategies? Let’s discuss. ?? Link to article: https://lnkd.in/gdXHPf9m). One of the most overlooked challenges in rotational work lifestyles is the constant transition between solo parenting and co-parenting. ?? While one partner is away, the other carries the full weight of family life— handling every responsibility alone.? ?? When the worker returns home, the entire household dynamic shifts again, requiring re-adjustment for both parents and children. ?? This back-and-forth creates stress, disrupts routines, and can impact emotional well-being—for the worker and their family.? Why should businesses care?? Because when employees struggle at home, it affects their performance at work. Companies can provide meaningful support through: ? Family transition support programs to help inform employees and their partners about challenges and strategies for navigating transitions between home and work, including the shift between solo and co-parenting.? ? Communication tools for partners to understand the needs and expectations of one another on days off, so both parties feel supported.? ? Mental health resources tailored to long-distance families to help navigate stress, burnout, and emotional shifts.? It’s time to rethink how we support workers beyond the job site. What is your company doing to invest in employee well-being at home? Let’s start the conversation. ??? For too long, the mental and emotional strain of working away from home—or being the spouse left behind—has been brushed off as “just part of the job.” It’s not.? ?? Workers face extreme isolation, exhaustion, and burnout.?? ?? Spouses shoulder the full weight of parenting, household management, and their own careers—alone.?? ?? Families live in cycles of disconnection and re-adjustment, over and over again.? And yet, society treats these struggles as a "given," rather than a problem to solve.? ? Where is the proactive mental health support for workers spending weeks or months away from their families??? ? Where are the resources for the spouses doing the heavy lifting at home, often sacrificing their own well-being??? ? Where are the conversations about how this lifestyle affects kids growing up with an absent parent half the time?? We cannot keep pretending this is just the cost of making a living. Family resilience isn’t about “toughing it out”—it’s about having real, structured support systems in place.? This conversation is overdue. I have lived as a long-distance family. My partner worked away on rotation in the oil and gas industry for years, the last 3 of which we were parents of 2 young children. This personal experience is why I know that traditional benefits often overlook the unique needs of long-distance families. I have experienced the chronic overwhelm of daily life, just trying to get by. Of knowing that I need help and resources, but not knowing how to begin finding them. I have experienced the difficult feelings of loneliness, resentment, exhaustion and hopelessness, looking around my network and not finding anyone who could relate to my situation. In developing LDF, I have spoken to many remote workers and spouses, and heard their stories as well. This is how I know that our experiences are not uncommon. They are, however, largely unspoken. At LDF, we’re changing that. From stress management strategies for solo parents to resources for navigating transitions, we offer a fresh approach to wellness that works for everyone. Our goal is to reduce the overwhelm and barriers to connection, to make these lifestyles more sustainable for all. ? Family support is essential to an individual's mental health recovery - but what do you do when both partners in a relationship are struggling with increased stress and mental health concerns? This is a frequent challenge that arises in families with a partner who works away from home. According to AnewEra TMS & Psychiatry, there are three main types of support: emotional, practical, and informational. Ideally, a family member is able to provide these types of support. When both partners are struggling, Long-Distance Family can meet these needs. Emotional support can include comfort, empathy, and understanding. LDF provides a peer support community to deliver this type of support. Practical support can include resources that assist with day-to-day activities, such as house cleaning or cooking. LDF helps normalize accepting assistance with these daily tasks, and provides service coordination to get the right resource in place for each family.
