Supplemental Spousal Liability Insurance (SSL) & Recent Legislative Changes in NYS! Supplemental spousal liability insurance provides bodily injury liability coverage if your spouse is responsible for an auto accident. This coverage allows you, as an injured passenger, to seek compensation from your own insurance company when your spouse is at fault. In August 2023, NYS issued a new law requiring insurance companies to automatically include supplemental spousal liability insurance in their policies. However, starting July 1st, 2024, SSL coverage will be charged as a separate premium. How does this affect you as a customer? While SSL will still be automatically included in auto policies, customers have the option to opt out by completing a form.
