Being a legal aid attorney can sometimes be an occupation that people take for granted, or even ignore the real purpose of why we exist. We don’t have the most glamorous of careers and often are denied a seat at the table amongsts our other legal colleagues who are seemingly thriving in other practice areas. For me, the greatest reward is a renewed sense of purpose everytime I am able to make a lasting difference and give individuals the opportunity to truly experience justice. These stories are why I am a legal aid attorney at Lone Star Legal Aid. Her surviving and thriving is greater than any “thank you” I will ever receive. Our work is valuable. We are doing good. One of my favorite things I get to do in the pro bono space is hosting current law students during Pro Bono Spring Break, sponsored by the Texas Access to Justice Commission. This year, Lone Star Legal Aid hosted four amazing students. We try our best to give a snippet of legal aid life in one week. This year, the students assisted with preparing documents for two pro se divorces, assisted with executing estate planning documents, conducted research, and and attended two community outreaches. They provided great insight into our procedures and the research they conducted, and I know I learned quite a bit from them. I hope that I did the same for them. I look forward to seeing what they do next! Project LACI (Legal Aid Content Intelligence), is software developed with significant support from the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) Technology Initiative Grants. LACI received a grant in 2022, started software development in June 2023, and deployed the first production server in May 2024. Since then, Lone Star Legal Aid (LSLA) has been using LACI to keep almost 800 legal information documents up to date. In 2024, the LSC awarded LSLA follow-up Sustainability, Enhancement, and Adoption (SEA) funding to enhance LACI and to help two partners, Texas Legal Services Center, Inc. and Idaho Legal Aid Services, Inc. integrate LACI into their own operations. Our current implementation, which was developed by BFC Digital was funded by Legal Services Corporation, and our Innovation Team includes Luigi Bai, April Maria Williams, Esq., Andrea Martinez, and H. Graham C..
