I'm often asked whether human communication is an art or a science. One way to describe what conversation analysts like me do in our research is that we identify and describe systematically (aka 'the science') what constitutes effective practice (aka 'the art'). It was such a pleasure to present at today's #GSTXIX (sharing the stage with David Beare Luke Skinner Birgitte Pingel David Mines Dr. Ryan O'Sullivan) which had as its theme 'The Art and Science of Sales Language.' I talked about my research on #sales, #mediation, and #crisis #negotiation, including the surprising interactional practices they share. I also gave examples of how, through collaborating with salespeople, mediators, negotiators - and academics Rein Ove Sikveland & Bogdana Huma - the research insights have impacted and benefitted some of the organizations I've worked with over the years. And it was a treat to visit, for the first time, 'the other LSE' - since Consalia's Global Sales Transformation was hosted, for the 17th year, at the London Stock Exchange :-) Many thanks for inviting me, Philip Squire Eddie Guevarra!
