Our hearts are with those affected by the many wildfires devastating our region. We continue to pray for our community and the courageous firefighters and first responders working tirelessly to protect and safeguard lives. "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." - Isaiah 41:10 ??: John Marshall, photo from 9/10/24

Can soy products increase the risk of cancer? We asked dietitian Erica Paulson from our Cancer Center to share her insights on the long-standing myth. Soy contains isoflavones – compounds that have a similar structure to estrogen. The similarity has led to the belief that soy can mimic estrogen in the body and cause cancer. Paulson assures that “these compounds have been found to have protective properties against certain cancers like prostate cancer.” The isoflavones in soy can actually reduce inflammation, prevent oxidative stress and are rich in antioxidants. After a construction injury left him quadriplegic, Paul Wilson refused to let it define his future. Over 34 years, he earned multiple degrees, ran successful businesses, and became an advocate for public handicap accessibility. His athletic determination from Idaho State helped him through surgeries and rehabilitation at Loma Linda University Health. Following a final surgery with Dr. Thomas Donaldson, Wilson became free of Heterotopic Ossification (HO), continuing his remarkable journey of resilience. “I’ve been in my wheelchair for over 35 years,” Wilson said. “Even though I’m not glad the spinal cord trauma happened, I never let it slow me down. In fact, I sped up!” Read Wilson’s story here: https://bit.ly/3MG1i0M

In the face of a challenging medical journey, Kodi discovered solace through an unexpected friendship with her nurse, Deborah. Their shared love for horses became a therapeutic escape, bringing peace during hardship. Years later, fate reversed their roles when Deborah became a patient in the same unit she met Kodi. Together, they created the "Flower Collage," a beautiful arrangement of brightly colored tissue paper, resembling a bouquet of flowers, now displayed in unit 1100. It is a symbol of their bond and the beautiful connections that can grow in the hardest of times. ???? #GratefulPatientDay

This Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Herbert Ruckle underlines the power of early detection in managing prostate cancer. A prostate biopsy plays a crucial role in identifying the presence of cancer cells. While the procedure might cause slight discomfort, it is usually quick, allowing same-day recovery. Understanding the process can reduce anxiety and ensure timely, effective treatment. If cancer is found, treatment options depend on factors such as the cancer's stage, grade, and the patient's age, condition, and preferences. Our PAD program provides minimally invasive treatments that avoid the need for open surgery, allowing most patients to be discharged on the same day with minimal recovery time. You may know cortisol as the “stress hormone” thanks to influencers on the internet. But how does it actually impact our bodies? We talked to expert Dr. Scott Lee to find out the truth behind the cortisol buzz. Lee shares the main symptoms of high cortisol including easy bruising, a reddened face and large stretch marks. Other symptoms include significant weight gain around the abdomen and neck, and psychological effects such as increased anxiety, agitation, and restlessness. All of these symptoms can disrupt daily living, and if left untreated, can lead to serious health issues. Many social media influencers claim that over-the-counter supplements can balance cortisol levels. However, Lee urges to take caution when taking such supplements. Instead, simple lifestyle modifications provide a more effective approach to managing cortisol levels. Learn more about how you can safely manage your cortisol levels. https://bit.ly/3z2AxAz
