Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects [LOHA] engages the ever-changing complexities of the urban landscape, embracing architecture’s role as a catalyst for change. With a conscious understanding that architecture operates within a layered context of political, developmental, environmental, and social structures, LOHA seeks to elevate the human condition via the built environment. Our design methodology, Amplified Urbanism is informed by the desire to create fluid interaction between public and private spaces, emphasize social and civic connections, and harness existing infrastructural and ecological patterns to cultivate vibrant communities. Driven by ruthless optimism and creative pragmatism, we believe that bold, enlightened design elevates the soul and enriches communities. We craft distinctive, sustainable, elegantly-resolved designs that not only meet the needs of our clients, but also respond to broader civic and social ambitions. Based out of our studios in Los Angeles and Detroit, LOHA has built over 90 projects across three continents. We deliver diverse work ranging from art galleries, bus shelters, and large-scale neighborhood plans, to large mixed-use developments and university residential complexes. We have been published in over 20 countries and recognized with over 100 awards.

Loved working with Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects [LOHA] on our Comma Barrington project, so great to see this in Architectural Record.
The architect Lorcan O’Herlihy is something of a go-to when it comes to designing apartment buildings in Los Angeles. In a city notorious for throwing constant regulatory and planning roadblocks at housing projects, O’Herlihy has a found a way to overcome challenges and get things built. This may explain, in part, how his firm, Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects (LOHA) was able to conceive and realize—starting in the depths of 2020—the planning, design and construction of an innovative co-living approach for Barrington 1503, a new apartment block in West L.A. that opened this March. Located along the city’s border with Santa Monica, and around the corner from two other recent O’Herlihy-designed apartment buildings, the 24,200-square-foot, four-story project consists of 18 units, with either four or five bedrooms, a kitchen and living space, and between two and four bathrooms. Although not affiliated with the University of California, Los Angeles, whose campus is a few miles north of the site, the project was developed as a model for student co-living to reduce housing costs compared to a more conventional studio or one-bedroom apartment. All units come completely furnished. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gTHTsr8V Words by Russell Fortmeyer Photos ? Eric Staudenmaier #architecture #design #losangeles
https://lnkd.in/gQM_aDDN Lorcan O'Herlihy, FAIA, will be at the Rizzoli Bookstore (1133 Broadway, NYC) MONDAY at 6pm to discuss LOHA's newest book: "Building in Place: Architecture Rooted in Context and Social Equity." "Building in Place: Architecture Rooted in Context and Social Equity" takes the reader through LOHA’s impactful solutions and strategies for architectural projects developed with social, political, and economic context in mind. The drive to redefine architecture as a force for progress has always been a hallmark of Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects, enacting a powerful alliance of inventive designs with vigorous social ideals. The location of each project is central as the book addresses the living histories as an essential part of each project’s narrative. "Building in Place" includes stories from Holos Communities supportive housing in South Los Angeles, cultural institutions like Sandi Simon Center for Dance at Chapman University, adaptive reuse projects that honor local history, and many others that celebrate the work and impact of LOHA. Many thanks to Greg Goldin for his expressive writing on LOHA's projects and Lorraine Wild for design. https://lnkd.in/gTHTsr8V Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects' newly completed Barrington1503 has been included as part of Architectural Record's March edition on Housing. Situated in LA's Sawtelle neighborhood, the Barrington1503 project recognizes the importance of co-living for the 21st century city and realizes a building perfectly suited to the model, bringing it into the urban fabric. "Architecturally, O’Herlihy describes the project as a series of layers and cuts. The layers emerge from a central courtyard, where stairs, balconies, and generous exterior corridors dynamically frame a tree on the ground floor, all surrounded by each apartment’s large sliding doors that reveal the living spaces to reinforce the collective sociability of the building’s core concept. The cuts—a hallmark of O’Herlihy’s repertoire—open the courtyard to the street, connecting the building’s outdoor spaces to the city, and divide the relatively square-plan building into four volumes. Material and color choices heighten the drama, with the street-facing elevations finished in black ribbed metal siding from Taylor Metals, set off with simple punched windows, while the contrasting cuts and courtyard are finished with white stucco that has been troweled to create deep grooves that give it the appearance of formed concrete." -- Russell Fortmeyer ?? We're honored to have been named #1 in Architecture on Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies List for 2025. Thank you Sam Lubell for your kind words on our Isla Intersections Supportive Housing and Paseo, and thank you to Holos Communities for the opportunity to bring such an innovative project to life.
As the world shifts and industries transform, the World’s Most Innovative Companies aren't just keeping up—they're setting the pace. Waymo, this year’s No. 1 company, has taken robotaxis from science fiction to reality. Athletic Brewing Co. is popularizing NA beer, while Nuuly is turning a profit on clothing rentals. DeepSeek AI is engineering new ways to build state-of-the-art AI models—and sharing its approach with others. And even in an era defined by automation, some of the smartest companies are turning unpredictability into an asset, from Duolingo and its chaotic owl mascot to Kendrick Lamar’s creative agency pgLang, and heavy-metal water brand Liquid Death. Other companies have met the moment and redefined it. Watch Duty helped Angelenos navigate their city’s devastating fires. Chainalysis brought needed transparency to the crypto industry. And Bluesky Social freed social media, at last, from corporate control. With the pace of change accelerating, businesses have to prepare for both the challenges of today and ones they’ve yet to identify. It’s a daunting task. But the process of selecting all 609 Most Innovative Companies across 58 categories gave us a glimpse into the future.
