Researchers from the Media Lab’s Fluid Interfaces group and OpenAI have conducted a series of studies to investigate how users’ wellbeing may be affected by uses of AI that involve emotional engagement. Their findings, while preliminary, show that both model and user behaviors can influence social and emotional outcomes. This research provides a starting point for further studies that can increase transparency, and encourage responsible usage and development of AI platforms across the industry. https://lnkd.in/gPJF63dQ

The Media Lab is pleased to announce the launch of AHA: Advancing Humans with AI (AHA at MIT Media Lab), a new, multi-faculty research program led by Media Lab Professor Pattie Maes and alum Dr. Pat Pataranutaporn. This program aims to address a critical gap in AI research and development: while tremendous resources are being devoted to improving AI's technical capabilities, far less attention has been paid to understanding how humans respond to these systems and how to design the technologies in ways that maximize positive human outcomes. AHA will create a new research effort around human-AI interaction through three complementary methods of inquiry: * Inspiring potential AI futures and applications through the design and deployment of novel AI experiences designed to benefit people; * Investigating both positive and negative impacts of AI use on human behavior and experience through rigorous studies; * Inventing new models, methods, and interfaces that aim to elevate people's capabilities, agency, and flourishing. We are excited to announce that ASPiH, Center for Medical Simulation and LOGOSNET Learning & Communication are commencing the Collaborative Learning and Artificial Intelligence Advancement in Simulation Practice Project (CLASP). This project will draw on the expertise and participation of ASPiH’s UK simulation community (in the first instance) to collect and analyse locally generated data that will feed into large language models (LLMs) to generate more culturally appropriate VR Avatars for communication training. This project supports ASPiH’s vision to advance healthcare simulation through collaborative global efforts. Watch this space for further updates on its progress. This technology is truly state of the art. The limitations of the end-user are the only thing that throttle this amazing development. The creative process of identifying the gap, developing a creative way to close that gap, and navigating the instructional design options - opens new ways of delivering an immersive experience that leverages artificial intelligence to help provide engaging feedback. We continue to work with e-REAL to build new ways to improve patient safety through better staff training.
