?? Buffer Tanks: A Boiler's Best Friend in Retrofit Applications ?? When upgrading or replacing an old cast iron boiler with a new copper or high-efficiency stainless water tube boiler, it's essential to account for the significant differences in water mass. The reduced mass of the new boiler could lead to cycling issues if not managed carefully. This is where the buffer tank comes into play! A buffer tank provides the needed mass to support minimum boiler run times and ensures hydraulic separation. It helps prevent frequent cycling, maximizes the efficiency of your system, and extends the lifespan of your boiler. ?? Key Considerations When Sizing a Buffer Tank: Understand the characteristics of the existing boiler, especially the mass (gallons) and turndown capabilities. If the minimum firing rate of the new boiler exceeds the smallest heat demand of the system, a buffer tank may be necessary to maintain stable operation. ?? The Calculation for Buffer Tank Capacity: Buffer Tank Capacity = Desired Run Time x (Minimum Boiler Output – Minimum System Load) / (System Delta T x 8.33 x 60) Where: Desired Run Time: Minimum boiler runtime before cycling off (Lochinvar recommends at least 10 minutes) Minimum Boiler Output: BTUs delivered at the minimum firing rate of the smallest boiler Minimum System Load: The smallest heat demand of the building System Delta T: Difference between the system supply and return temperature 8.33: Weight of one gallon of water 60: Minutes in an hour Why It Matters: By taking the time to calculate the appropriate buffer tank size, you're ensuring your retrofit system runs efficiently, avoids premature cycling, and maximizes your boiler's performance. #HydronicHeating #BoilerSystems #EnergyEfficiency #BufferTank #HVAC #Retrofit #BoilerSizing #Engineering
