Indigenous People’s Day is celebrated on the second Monday in October as a counter-holiday to Columbus Day to shift the focus to celebrating Indigenous cultures and histories. The holiday was first instituted in Berkley, California, in 1992 and has since been recognized and adopted by 17 states. Today, it recognizes the resilience Indigenous people have showcased and continues to show through their traditions and unity.
