关于我们
The Local Business Institute is a national nonprofit organization based in Austin, Texas that is dedicated to the creation and support of thriving, sustainable local business communities through education, research and community-building programs. Part think tank, part school, part national leadership and part training ground for local leadership, the Institute promotes entrepreneurship through education, consulting, coaching and fostering organizations that support local business. Through special projects, distance learning, virtual and live conferences, lectures and events, we work to foster local, national and even global conversations around entrepreneurship and local economies. We bring substantial resources to students of all ages and in many under-served regions, including many who are not currently engaged in education, policy work or business ownership at all.

Great work Stacy Mitchell! Thanks for another enlightening piece.
Conventional explanations for why food deserts exist fail to contend with a key fact: Poverty and ruralness have been with us forever, but food deserts arrived only in the late 1980s. Prior to that, even the smallest towns and poorest neighborhoods could generally count on having a grocery store — and often they had several. Food deserts didn’t materialize around the country for no reason. Something happened. That something was a specific federal policy change in the 1980s. My latest piece for The Atlantic.
