What is ink? ?? For centuries, the pigments in ink have relied on carbon black, a material made from fossil fuels. This practice has been around since the invention of the printing press in the 15th century. We interact with ink every day—on our t-shirts, books, and packaging. But have you ever stopped to ask: ?? What exactly is ink made of? ?? Could it come from harmful sources like petroleum? Sadly, yes—traditional inks still rely on a petroleum byproduct for color. Thankfully, in the 21st century, renewable alternatives have arrived! At Living Ink we’re rethinking what ink can be—with algae. ?? Our ALGAE INK? products are plant-based, safe, and help shift demand away from petroleum. Printed materials are everywhere, making them a powerful tool for change. Switching to natural colorants is a simple shift with a big impact—an innovation your customers are sure to engage with daily. ?

Algae waste + shell waste combine to restore marine ecosystems. ?? ?? We're excited to partner with ReefCircular ApS and WWF, through limited edition Algae Ink? prints, helping restore damaged marine habitats. ?? ReefCircular turns shell waste into bio-concrete for 3D-printed artificial reefs, rebuilding critical marine ecosystems and boosting biodiversity. Similarly, our Algae Ink transforms algae waste into sustainable pigments—renewable wastestreams to drive regeneration. Preparations are being made for the next oyster reef restoration project in Scotland, working with Seawilding, The Kelp Conservation Initiative, and Anemo Robotics, with support from The Marine-Fund-Scotland (The Scottish Government) and The Fishmongers' Company. Every purchase or donation of this special run of Algae Ink-printed shirts, totes, and posters—available through both the WWF Verdensnaturfonden / WWF Denmark web shop and the ReefCircular Kickstarter—directly funds this vital research and restoration work. Congratulations Kathryn Larsen and team on the amazing work so far! #ReefRestoration #CircularEconomy #MarineBiodiversity #SustainableInnovation #WWF #ReefCircular #LivingInk #Algae #ClimateAction #MarineConservation #Crowdfunding #AlgaeInk #SustainableFashion #WildlifeConservation #Screenprinting #RenewableMaterials

From the pond to the page: ALGAE INK? on the cover of TYPE01 print magazine. We can't help but be mesmerized by the latest print edition, Issue 09, from TYPE01 featuring our Offset Algae Ink. ?? This issue, all about packaging, food, and typography, is a true testament to the potential of eco-friendly printing in both packaging and publication sectors. ?? Issue 09 also explores a variety of GF Smith papers, like the innovative Extract line made from recycled coffee cups-- collectively embodying the teams' shared commitment to sustainability. ?? By using Living Ink's algae-based color, TYPE01 is pushing the envelope of what's possible in sustainable print and design. Our black inks, popularized in both the packaging and apparel industries, are made from renewable biomass waste, like discarded algae, offering an earth-safe alternative to traditional inks colored with fossil fuels. A big thank you to GF Smith and Pressision, Creative Print & Packaging for their partnership, and to TYPE01 for championing innovative materials and sustainable practices. #SustainablePrinting #AlgaeInk #EcoFriendly #Innovation #LivingInk #TYPE01 #GFSmith #CreativePrint #PackagingDesign #Typography #Algae #Printdesign #Magazineprint #Publication #Ink #PrintingInk #SustainablePackaging #RenewableMaterials
