Grateful to have been asked to give the keynote speech (along with the unstoppable Alexis Pleus) at the Live Tampa Bay Regional Leaders Luncheon. 300 business, faith and philanthropic leaders gathered to create positive change in our region.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the 300 esteemed individuals comprising business, faith, and philanthropic leaders, alongside community and front-line champions, who graced our 3rd Live Tampa Bay Leaders Luncheon to End Overdose on March 15th at the Hilton Carillon Park Hotel in St. Pete. Your presence contributed significantly to the success of this pivotal event aimed at eradicating stigma and raising awareness in our collective fight against the opioid crisis. We are immensely grateful for your participation and commitment to this cause, and we eagerly anticipate sharing more moments captured during the luncheon. Words can't express how honored I was to receive the Torchbearer Award at the Live Tampa Bay Luncheon on Friday. While I'm grateful for the award, it wasn't about me. It was about celebrating the lives and legacies of people who have influenced my life greatly: my sister, Tammy Hartfield, and my friend and brother, David Pizzo. Tammy's passion for older adults and those living with a developmental disability is what birthed Serenity Village and shaped the work we do with Empower Florida. David's heart for the community inspired his work with Florida Blue and shaped everything he did. Unfortunately, Tammy never lived to see her dream come to fruition. She died a few hours after we closed on the business due to an overdose. After learning my story, David encouraged me to get involved with Live Tampa Bay to help end this crisis. I'm so glad I did. The work this organization is doing is incredible and needed. And although David and Tammy are no longer with us, I will carry the torch they lit for me for the rest of my life. Darryl Rouson, Jennifer Webb, Rita Lowman, Rene Flowers, Dr. Renée Baker, DBA, RCC??, BJ Daniels, Jorgie Franks, Bridgette Bello, Naakesh (Nick) Dewan, M.D. CPE, DLFAPA, FASAM, J.C. This is what authenticity and a quest to help others looks like. Sharon Fekete ?? has become “the crane” to others struggling with addictions. She LIFTS them out of the dark recesses that keep them thinking “there’s no end to this” , “I’m not worth saving”, and “I’m not strong enough to change”. 30+ years ago, she was the one on the receiving end of a “crane” - struggling with alcohol and drug addiction in her loving, middle income, working class family. Addiction has no borders or social class preferences. It devours many and any. Live Tampa Bay is wise to recruit this powerhouse of a game changer. Jennifer Webb , Bemetra Simmons , Rita Lowman, Darryl Rouson thank you for your efforts in this arena!
Thank you Jennifer Webb CEO of Live Tampa Bay who led an incredible event yesterday. This coalition is committed to reducing the number of opioid overdoses and deaths by encouraging collaboration; stirring up public interest, and visibly supporting the solutions available and working in our communities. The keynote delivered by Sean Daniels, a critically acclaimed playwright, and Alexis Pleus, world renowned design engineer, was heartfelt and inspiring. “Together our stories will reverberate through our community and begin to breakdown the shame, stigma and secrecy that fuel the overdose.” Many thanks to my dear friend Rita Lowman , who continues to work tirelessly with many business leaders to reduce Opioid deaths and ensure action is taken. I’m so proud of you Rita and very honored to play a part by sharing my journey alongside you. #mentalhealthatwork #nomoreshame #opioidepidemic
