Empowering our youth and young adults to reclaim the vision for their future.

关于我们

Live In Peace is empowering our youth and young adults to reclaim the vision for their future. We are a team of EPA community leaders who function as extended family members to our students and to each other. We operate in the same spirit of the village that birthed East Palo Alto. Any success in our program areas is owed most significantly to this family spirit that shapes our work. Simply put, we are a family who loves this city and will do whatever we can to support the preservation and advancement of its people and cultures.

“Never cease to act because you fear you may fail. The true secret is to know your own worth. It will carry you through many dangers.” – Queen Lili‘uokalani Queen Lili‘uokalani was a fearless leader who fought to protect her people and preserve the sovereignty of Hawaii. As the last reigning monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom, she stood strong against the forces that sought to strip her nation of its power. Even in the face of overthrow and imprisonment, she never wavered in her commitment to justice. Through her words, music, and activism, she left behind a legacy of resilience, dignity, and unwavering love for her people. That same indomitable spirit lived in Mama Dee—a leader, a mother to many, and a force for change in East Palo Alto. For over three decades, she poured her heart into her community, ensuring that youth had opportunities to succeed. She empowered generations through education, culture, and unwavering belief in their potential. Whether mentoring young people, preserving Polynesian traditions, or advocating for her community on a national stage, Mama Dee lived her truth with courage and conviction. Both Queen Lili‘uokalani and Mama Dee knew their worth—and in doing so, they taught others to know theirs. Their legacies remind us to stand firm in who we are, to lift up our communities, and to never stop fighting for what is right. ??? #ShePavedTheWay #WomensHistoryMonth #QueenLiliuokalani #MamaDee #LegacyOfLeadership #KnowYourWorth #LiveInPeace #HERStory

  • Live In Peace honors John Lewis, 1940-2020 John Lewis, the man who coined the term “good trouble,” dedicated his life to the fight for justice and equality. From his early activism in the 1960s, including sit-ins, Freedom Rides, and leading the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge during “Bloody Sunday,” Lewis’ courage and commitment to nonviolence shaped the Civil Rights Movement. A proud member of the “Big 6,” Lewis helped organize, and was the youngest organizer and speaker, the March on Washington, was pivotal in the passage of the Voting Rights Act, and served as a U.S. Congressman for Georgia’s 5th district for over 30 years. Even after enduring violent attacks, injuries, and over 40 arrests, Lewis continued to advocate for civil rights with unwavering resolve. His mantra—make “good trouble”—inspires us to keep fighting for justice, equality, and human dignity. ??? Living Legacy: David Harper Born and raised in East Palo Alto, David Harper has dedicated his life to uplifting his community. As the owner of sHarper Images, his barbershop is more than a place for a fresh cut—it’s a hub of mentorship and inspiration. Once a camper at Camp May-Mac, David later returned as a counselor, continuing his passion for guiding young people. His shop features a library of children’s books, and he founded Barber Shop Boys, a mentorship program that challenges young men to grow in character and pursue their goals. Now, he’s expanding his impact by launching a barber school to train and mentor future barbers in both craft and business. We are grateful for David’s friendship and his unwavering commitment to the next generation. His legacy is already taking root, and we can’t wait to see what’s next. #JohnLewis #BlackHistoryMonth #LivingLegacy #DavidHarper

"I want to be remembered as a lover of people, who wanted, more than anything else, to help somebody, knowing that if I could help somebody, I would not have lived in vain." Living Legacy: Lerisa Puckett If persistence had a name, it would be Lerisa Puckett! She put her kids through college first, then went back and earned her own degree from USF, proving that it’s never too late to chase your dreams. Lerisa left USF in 1994 to raise her family, dedicating herself to her three children, all of whom went on to college. But when a principal at her kids’ school told her she didn’t belong there and should go back to school, she took that challenge to heart. In 2022, she returned to USF, determined to finish what she started. Through late nights, hard work, and the unwavering support of her family, Lerisa made it happen. She was set to graduate the same day as her youngest son, Keyshawn, a full-circle moment that shows just how powerful her journey has been. Lerisa, you DID THAT—and we couldn’t be prouder! Your story is one of resilience, strength, and never giving up on yourself.
