Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly, New York Expansion Site

Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly (LBFE) is a national network of non-profit, volunteer-based organizations committed to relieving loneliness and isolation among older adults. We offer to people of good will the opportunity to join the elderly in friendship and the celebration of life. Inspired by our founder Armand Marquiset, LBFE's motto "Flowers before bread" expresses our belief that love and dignity and beauty in life are as essential as physical needs. LBFE has one Expansion Site in New York and independent chapters in five US locations: Chicago, Cincinnati, Boston, San Francisco and Upper Michigan. Since 2016, LBFE New York offers friendly visiting programs to elderly New Yorkers living alone and with little or no family support. All programs are offered free of charge and for the reminder of our elderly recipients lifetime. Thanks to the support and generosity of hundreds of volunteers, donors, and community partners, LBFE in New York has made over 5,000 in-person visits and 10,000 phone calls to homebound individuals from the age of 61 to 111. Recently, the US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy talked about the public health crisis caused by our nation's loneliness epidemic, and how social connections are as essential to our mental and physical health as food, water and sleep. An effective solution to address this issue of social isolation is to invest in programs fostering inter-generational friendships. Such programs benefit all participants by showing elderly recipients they are remembered, seen, heard, and loved. It also gives volunteers many opportunities to listen and learn from older adults they call and visit all year round. By creating and nurturing a space where inter-generational friendships can grow and last a lifetime, we can make New York a kinder place to grow older.
