It was great to have Keighty from Literacy Works stop by our office yesterday! We partner with Literacy Works to provide our main volunteer tutor training, and they also support us through many additional resources for our staff and volunteers. Thanks, Keighty and team, for all you do!

Advancing equity by promoting literacy education and the use of clear language
关于我们
Literacy Works believes that access to education and information is essential for a just society. We work to advance adult education and communication equity for all. We stand as a key resource to community-based literacy programs, providing low-cost, high quality educational guidance and support. For programs throughout Illinois, Literacy Works serves as a central source of professional development, networking, and peer learning. Through our work in adult education, we have seen first hand the need to address the systemic barriers that many people face, especially those that have been historically harmed by systems. Our Clear Language Lab offers training, consulting, and coaching services to nonprofit and governmental organizations in a variety of sectors. We work with organizations across the country to make their communications more clear, accessible, and equitable. Our vision is that one day, literacy will be recognized as a basic human right, supporting people along their journey to read, write, and interpret the world.

NEW BLOG POST: "Recently, we experienced an unexpected turn of events while leading a group discussion. The group was talking about what seemed to be a bland everyday subject, when a participant had a strong reaction. We were able to navigate safely through the conversation and make sure the community member felt heard. Afterwards, we reflected on the trauma informed practices that helped us in the moment..." https://lnkd.in/gXgpq8Wk

"At the beginning of July, all of us at Literacy Works were excited to share our new values statements. We’re not just proud of the statements we came up with (which I think truly reflect how we do our work), but also the process that got us here. For the final piece in our Trauma-Informed Communication series, we’re talking about Collaboration. Meaningful collaboration doesn’t happen accidentally, but through thoughtful planning and intentional processes. I’d like to share with you how we worked together as a team to develop our new values statements..." https://lnkd.in/gChA5c_J

This week, our Community Literacy team hosted a roundtable for our members with Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias! The Illinois State Library, a division of the Office of Secretary of State, is one of the largest sources of funding for adult education programs in Illinois. Members were able to share information about their programs and the unique challenges they face directly with the Secretary and key members of his staff. We are so grateful to the @ilsecofstate office for joining us and keeping an open dialogue with their grantees. We hope to continue working closely with Secretary Giannoulias and his team to fight for more funding and ensure the voices of adult ed workers and volunteers are heard! Thank you to all of our members who were able to join us, and special thanks to everyone who shared their story.
