Literacy Works believes that access to education and information is essential for a just society. We work to advance adult education and communication equity for all. We stand as a key resource to community-based literacy programs, providing low-cost, high quality educational guidance and support. For programs throughout Illinois, Literacy Works serves as a central source of professional development, networking, and peer learning. Through our work in adult education, we have seen first hand the need to address the systemic barriers that many people face, especially those that have been historically harmed by systems. Our Clear Language Lab offers training, consulting, and coaching services to nonprofit and governmental organizations in a variety of sectors. We work with organizations across the country to make their communications more clear, accessible, and equitable. Our vision is that one day, literacy will be recognized as a basic human right, supporting people along their journey to read, write, and interpret the world.

Special shout out to our current Community Literacy Member Spotlight, Project CARE at Morton College. We recently spoke with Rebecca Angevine, who walked us through how they have transformed their program since 2020. After moving to a hybrid program model, Rebecca and her team were able to stabilize their program and double their numbers. Now, that trend has continued for the last 3 years. Throughout this time, Project CARE has been an active member of Literacy Works' Community Literacy program. Rebecca found community in our monthly Coordinator Support Meeting, and sees great value in brainstorming with her adult education colleagues. “It’s so important to create that environment of learning and sharing information. Relationships are key to building a program," Rebecca said. We are proud to be a key resource for adult education programs like Project CARE, and can't wait to continue celebrating the accomplishments of our members!
