Stories and STEM is buzzing into spring with Curious George and happy honeybees. Students enjoyed learning all about bees and reading "Curious George, A Home For Honeybees" by H.A. Rey. Students became busy bees, engaging in their engineering project, constructing bee buzzers and learning about sound waves. This was a difficult task but "Bee-hind" every great accomplishment is a supportive hive. ???????? This February, kids from Lantana Elementary 21st Century afterschool program had a blast with the Read! Lead! Succeed! program. They explored the powerful message of self-love, reading stories about embracing who they are, and then they got creative by crafting their own framed mirrors and puzzles as meaningful keepsakes. Stories and STEM sprouts into action with fun germination activities, learning how a seed turns into a plant. We read "Things That Grow" by Libby Walden to understand the life cycle of plants.?Students created living seed necklaces that are able to grow from their own body heat and later be planted at home. "Lettuce" celebrate the temperature rising, as we "root" for beautiful blooms. ?????? Stories and STEM takes off in the new year. Welcoming 2025 with the sky as the limit, our students take flight with paper airplane races. After learning about flight through reading "Flight" by Robert Burleigh, students eagerly strategized their airplane designs and got to work. This was just "plane" awesome! ?? What an honor it is to serve children in after school programs, such as Adopt-A-Family! Daron Morse, Director of Youth Educational Services, had this to say: "Thank you to the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County for bringing their Read! Lead! Succeed! program to Project Grow! Over the course of six sessions with Ms. Lauren, the students read books that fostered social-emotional learning and then completed a collaborative group project of their choosing. The K-2nd graders read about being kind to themselves in 'Who I Am Words: I Tell Myself' by Susan Verde. For their activity, they decorated heart-shaped clips to display positive affirmations. The 3rd-5th graders read 'Out of a Jar' by Deborah Marcero, which teaches that life is more colorful when you don't bottle up all your feelings, and the kids created colorful snow globes out of repurposed glass jars."
