? HOT OFF THE PRESS: Retrofitting existing buildings is a key solution to hitting US climate goals and providing energy-efficient and affordable housing for millions of people. With most of the buildings that will exist in 2050 already standing, the challenges of decarbonizing them are immense—high upfront costs, fragmented financing, and complex guidance among them. ?? RMI's ?? report (https://lnkd.in/gbFTFYBD ) outlines how we’re tackling these obstacles in Massachusetts through the 1,000 Apartment Challenge in partnership with Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)/LISC Massachusetts, Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, and other stakeholders. ??♀? By building out a robust pipeline of deep energy retrofit "lighthouse projects", we've gained new insights into what it takes to drastically lower energy usage and fossil fuel pollution from affordable multifamily buildings while enhancing health and comfort for low-and middle-income residents. By overcoming the challenges and adopting the innovative solutions and technologies RMI lays out in this report, we can further scale building decarbonization efforts nationwide and create healthier, more energy-efficient homes for all. Earlier this week, the LISC Massachusetts team was in New Bedford for a jam-packed and inspiring tour of the Acushnet Ave/North End neighborhood. We met with residents and vital community development partners who are all helping build new housing, launch community spaces, and grow new businesses in this vibrant neighborhood. We also hosted 30+ New Bedford area small business owners for an information session on LISC MA's small biz programs and opportunities! When we unveiled our new "LISC Massachusetts" name back in April we hoped to signal our ambition for deeper impact across the Commonwealth. We also pledged to get out of the office and hit the road to meet stakeholders, neighbors, business owners, and funders where they are to build stronger and more trusted relationships with key partners in our work. This week's visit to New Bedford moved us closer to that goal. And it's just the start... This fall we'll be visiting cities across the state more often to better understand how our current programs, tools, and resources can best support local needs to build resilient and inclusive communities?of opportunity in all regions of Massachusetts.
