Helping neighbors build community.

关于我们

LISC AmeriCorps is a national service program made possible by funding from the AmeriCorps federal agency to inspire community connection and promote community solutions. Since 1994, passionate, dedicated people serving as LISC AmeriCorps members with community development groups in the places where LISC works, from urban centers to rural communities, has been a vital part of our capacity building strategy. LISC AmeriCorps members serve an important, three-fold purpose: members serve with organizations to spearhead valuable projects; they engage local residents in the revitalization of their own neighborhoods; and they develop skills, experience and insight into community development and the profound value of service. LISC AmeriCorps is a valuable talent pipeline for community economic development and is an onramp for people with lived experience to secure good jobs. LISC AmeriCorps offers a competitive national service living stipend, leadership training opportunities, and opportunities to connect with like-minded peers across the LISC AmeriCorps network. LISC AmeriCorps equips emerging leaders with the skills to effect long-term community-based change.

Meet Alicia Smith, a British Columbia native and member of the Splatsin Tribe. She traveled all over the U.S. for her husband’s welding job until a few years ago, when the couple decided to settle in Billings, MT and start their own welding business (they have since added a cattle business to their holdings).? ? As they built their businesses, Smith worked a corporate job that left her feeling empty. “I just didn't feel like I was serving my purpose,” she said. She wanted to take what she’s learned and help other indigenous people become successful entrepreneurs. That’s when she discovered Native American Development Corporation, a Native #CDFI based in Billings that supports economic development in Native American communities.? ? As a LISC AmeriCorps - Economic Mobility Corps member placed with NADC with support from Citi Foundation, Smith assists a team that connects indigenous entrepreneurs to the tools, coaching and capital they need to shore up their personal finances and build successful businesses. Impressed with her work and dedication to the mission, NADC hired Smith for a full-time position when her AmeriCorps service term ends in April.? ? ??? Hear Smith talk about what inspired her to work for NADC and why the support it provides to indigenous entrepreneurs is so impactful.?? ? As devastating fires rage across LA County and elsewhere in Southern California, we at LISC are working to monitor the situation and stay in touch with our colleagues on the ground. The incredible LISC LA team, headed by executive director Nicole Williams, is currently safe (some of them have had to evacuate, others have lost power). Williams and her staff, meanwhile, are reaching out to LISC’s many community-based partners in the area to learn about their wellbeing and that of the residents they serve. We will keep all of you updated as we learn more, and will be standing by to support the Los Angeles team, our LISC San Diego and Rural LISC California co-workers and the communities we work with in the aftermath of this catastrophic climate event.
